Worth weld repairing, or too much of a risk?

£75 for a replacement part is imho a complete rip-off, but what price an engine re-build?

Definitely repairable. Happened to mine many years/miles ago, the guys (now) at Bespoke 'welded' it for me.

Okay thanks for the feedback

The plant fitters at work are recommending an epoxy glue rather than welding, apparently it works up to 350 degrees.

I used epoxy on mine about 3 years ago and its still attached. 'Double bubble' 2 part stuff mix it and it sets in about 20 mins. Ping me your address I will send you some. It just sits in the tank when it falls off so you have to fish it out.

The one on my Tamora broke like that too before I had it. It was repaired not very nicely by drilling a hole through the cap and using a screw into the hollow centre of the dip stick.

The one on my Sag broke the other week so I'll be interested to see how you fix yours.
Tried epoxy which usually works when the domed part comes away from the cap but it failed again very quickly.

What's the epoxy supposed to bind too ? All the surfaces are very smooth.

I'd be using JB Weld. Have used it on engine blocks (when over-zealously grinding from the inside out) and to repair a cracked ally sump on an old diesel e-class, which was weeping. Clean surfaces with brake cleaner, rough 'em a bit with sand paper or emery then mix and apply smile Can't see it being any different to 'bond' your pieces of dipstick back together. and it's what I'd use if mine failed.

I've used JB Weld and it's pretty good, also used Steel Putty and is also pretty good.

Bob I have both somewhere if you want to try them, or I can have a look at another solution for you.

Sorted - drilled out the hole slightly, filled the void between outer and inner caps with JB Weld and inserted the dipstick, only slight negative is the dipstick is now approx 5mm shorter than before.

That looks like a Tuscan dip stick as they are longer than the other T-cars

I hope it is not to long as I have just bought it, my T350 dipstick has also parted company with the lid. If it is the wrong size I will turn it in to an ornament LoL

Hi Shep you were absolutely right the dipstick is a Tuscan part and much too long for a T 350 I will try and modify it by cutting it to the correct length.

Just drill a hole in the screw cap and the tube, squeeze in some lock tight and screw in a self tapper, did mine 3 years still good.thumbup
