Hi All,

It's been a while since I did a trackday but have just booked myself on Opentrack's Thursday evening session at Bedford this week. Can't remember what I hit on the noise meter last time.

101dB is the static test limit - do you reckon I should be ok? T350 3.6 stock speed6 with ACT carbon airbox and ACT big bore exhaust (cats still in place).

I'd say not a chance, the act on it's own is pretty loud and well above 101. I know mine is decatted with an act so not a direct comparison but it's 128DB and no way do the de-cats alone make 28DB difference.

Just download the free "db volume" onto your iphone or similar and test your car, it was pretty close mine read 106db-108db on it and at the track it was 108db, job done, no pint turning up and you can,t get on track, or buy a set of track day silencers ACT do them as well

Mine was 110DB 5KRPM with an ACT JP Exhaust and Decat. I think you will struggle.

Ok getting me worried here.

I know I made it under the 103db limit when I did Snetterton but can't remember what reading was and recall it was close.

Don't suppose anyone has a set of bolt on silencers I could borrow that'd fit. London area or near to Bedford?

I would recommend that you definitely need to fit some track day silencers or you will be making a wasted trip. My T350 decat with ACT sport back box and set up on Omex to have less pops and bangs is over 108 dB.

Darn! I was thinking of booking myself on the EVO one in June but wasn't sure. I was going to download the noise meter App but I have a Samsung S3 and one of the App's review says this phone is only good for below 90dB (microphone is inadequate).

I think Bedford tests at 4000rpm for static

I have ACT exhaust but also sports cat (which I understand is slightly louder than standard).

This was going to be my first track day with the TVR. Oh well, never mind. At least I'm going on a Welsh tour soon, yippy!

Well quick update after a fantastic evening despite the rain...

Sailed through the noise test. They asked me to do 4k revs and gave a reading of 96dB. For reference that was a nicely warmed up 3.6 engine with ACT big bore, ACT carbon airbox and cats still in place.

Had no problems with the on track noise meters either. I can confirm that they do operate a strict policy of ending your day early if you breach the on track meters. I think there may have been a Scooby black flagged, not sure if that was for noise.

Well organised day all in all and good mix of people. Free insttuction and pictures too all for £80! Opentrack would definitely use again.

Thinking about getting the same setup myself, maybe with 200cell cats. How would you say it compares to standard from a sound quality pov? pops and bangs? I'd like a few more of those compared to standard (only happens on overrun @3K rpm, but barely audible inside).

Cheers

btw, wondering if the "not chance" crowd misread the original post? As in, missed the "big bore" bit... afaik this complete system is designed to be reasonably quiet, but deeper/nicer rumble.

Sadly I've sold the T350 now but I'd highly rate the ACT system. With cats in it's a much nicer sound and less "boomy" at motorway speeds. Provides a few pops and bangs on the overrun but still understated. If you take the cats out or had more free flowing I suspect you'd have a lot more pops and bangs. Not an expert but I'm sure Jason (STR8SIX) once warn me away from some of the sport cats on the grounds that they don't last very long. Worth doing your research before shelling out £££

Thanks Ric!
I'll do some research on sports cat durability.

I want this ACT big bore exhaust system for my Tam, but I cannot stretch my 4.3 budget to have it frown.

I may get it when the car goes in for it's run-in service....

They should test the cars at 3/4 max revs static.

You should be checked at a higher RPM and as the noise levels rise exponentially you probably would have failed.

For reference, my RV8 with a standard exhaust plus full decat is tested at 4.5K RPM and is nearly always 105db.

Tamy has cats and ACT backbox. Sneaked through the Snetterton test of 105dB in summer. Failled completely at Oulton in the early winter. Passed at Brands with the standard backbox in December.

3.6 s6 engine with standard intake.

The ACT Tamora system was built on my car, and tested with and without the cats. These were the figures:

With cats
Idle 85db
4500rpm 96db
5000rpm 95db
6000rpm 100db

Without cats
Idle 90db
4500rpm 99db
5000rpm 99db
6000rpm 105db

Same system on mine idles at over your 5000rpm value.

How long has it been on? Mine's definitely getting louder.
