Have you looked at this thread:

The gap between rad an air inlet needs to be blocked otherwise fans will blow hot air through the vents.

Andy
I did see that thread, a very interesting read.

However, as there isn't a chance in hell of me doing the job myself (without trashing my P&J that is), I would have had to rely on specialists for the install, who, I would presume would know exactly what they're doing.

As no-one does this any longer, due to lack of OE parts it's all now a little moot anyway... smile

You can do the same thing on a car without aircon and it will stop the hot air from the rad getting through vents where the air intake is behind the left hand fog light.

Is this something a (less than capable, going on past experiences) owner could do - or is it something best left to a specialist?

I'm not sure yet. I'm about to tackle the job myself. I will let you know.

I waiting for the template to come through then I will make it available on the web to download. Hopefully with the template it should be a matter of cutting something to size and sticking in.

I personally wouldn't retrofit it - I don't think it's fully up to the task.

My suggestion would be to:
Properly insulate the cabin to stop heat soak.
Properly resolve the venting channels behind the dash (insulate them also, as mine seems to lose a lot of cold behind the dash).
(I wonder if that would make a difference and mean it works properly... Hmmmm)
Get an after-market kit made/made to fit for it.

Or do others think their aircon is good enough?

Mine is good especially the glove box which is like a freezer when air con is on, good for a can of beer.

There was one company that I used to fit an aircon unit in an old project car I had which they adapted. If you are still after one I could see if I can find the details still - from memory they said they could retrofit aircons to just about anything.

As I am 10 years older since my first Tamora, and the traffic seems to have got worse since then, I find myself, more often than not sitting in traffic queues. Now, then the car is moving, it is great, but when going at a snails pace, the cabin heat can become very uncomfortable - more so when we have this interchangeable weather, when the roof has to stay in place.

So, is it still possible to have aircon retrofitted? I know this would cost at least £2k, but the car is a keeper, I love it, so I don't mind spending the money, especially as I plan to go on a few Euro trips in the future.

If it is possible, who would be the best to do the job, any recommendations?
what you could do is fit such small system...and its from the UK

like say something like this?
