Just checking the coolant level, the expansion tank as next to nothing in it :-( what level should the coolant be in the tank? topping up, should that be just filling it via the expansion tank or into the long tank?

Thanks

Yup, agree with above. There are a number of differtent "expansion tanks" (TVR Mads do a usefull one!).

Basically the "tall tank", if you have an expansion tank, should be full without any air, when cold. Your expansion tank should then be filled half-way as a start!

Provided you have the full "Tall-tank", then the expansion will find it's own level after a few runs? Some have an inch and others nearly three quarters full? Provided it doesn't blow it all out, it usually remains or finds it's own level (other than empty after every run) !! If it doesn't have a sight glass/level guage, don't remove the cap & look at the innards until it is cold!!

Hope that helps?

I believe the tall tank right in front of the engine is called swirl pot. If you have a newer model or your cooling system was upgraded sometime you have an additional expansion tank connected via a smaller diameter hose to the top of the swirl pot. My expansion tank is located at the inner wall of the front wing. When i check for coolant level I make sure, that the expansion tank has about an inch of coolant in it (swirl pot is full to the brim, of course). When I add more it spills usually during an outing due to expansion. The blue cap has a valve, which opens up at 1.3 bar overpressure.

Thanks for the replies, All topped and fingers crossed that the coolant stays put, as mentioned in my post there was only about 10mm of coolant at the bottom of the header tank, the level in the swirl pot was just above the hose. I have topped the swirl pot up the top and the header tank around half way......
Thanks

Aimy, worst think that'll happen is, that it blows off coolant from the expansion tank cap in case you overfilled.
Half of the expansion tank might be a bit too much in my book, but maybe you have a different tank as pointed out in the above posts.

I have a T350 and the expansion bottle always has just a small amount in the bottom. I think it's they system finding its own level. It is an expansion tank after all, there is supposed to be space in it.
