TBH, this desire among some TVR owners for more noise mystifies me. I think they're quite loud enough already (and a number of race tracks agree with me), even too loud in some cases. Yes, the noise is amusing for a few minutes, but it gets old (and boring and irritating) *really* quickly, especially on the motorway.
Have to say that I agree with this. I have just replaced my whole system with the ACT big bore version, and it is much quieter (but still great to listen to) than standard with Power sports back boxes. Makes it much less of an ear ache for standard motorway cruising as there's n more drone at around 3k revs.

Must be my age, as I now prefer subtle, rather than ASBO loud.....

Just adjust the panels or get Str8Six to add additional foam which many of us have and job done.
When I enquired if there was anything that could be done about the noise, I was told no. It's
not only the air leaks, which could likely be fixed, but the noise from the air rushing over the panels outside, which obviously cannot be changed. All things considered, I'd rather go without the targa top.

The exhaust obviously isn't loud enough either tongue out

It depends on the car as all TVRs are individual, but my panels are silent up to 100mph. No wind noise. Same for the door seals. If it is very windy you get a bit of noise about 90mph. My wife knows when I'm 'pressing on' when she hears them whistle driving

The "problem" is that I'm not prepared to commit £40K on the basis of "it depends". smile

I haven't got my heart set on a Targa, so it's not a problem for me. A coupe will do just fine.

Each to their own smile Some like the roar, rasp and pops and bangs. Some like bright cars, others prefer something more refined that won't wake the neighbours up or have young kids and their fathers waving and smiling as you go by. It's about living for the moment and everyone does it differently smile The first exhaust experience I had was turning up to my first meet a week after buying her and had the comment, great colour but your exhaust isn't loud enough. I went home ordered a JP and the pops and bangs, the rasping sound started. Amazing smile However a mates got a 4.3 with the same setup and I cringe when I hear the exhaust, too loud for me! If we were all the same what a boring TVR community we would have.

Unfortunately though it is a case of that. My roof seals are fine up to 100 but my door seal, especially drivers side starts around 60mph and is incredibly annoying. Fortunately my ASBO exhaust drowns the whistling out wink

hehe

'Tis true - other seals (doors especially) can be a problem regarding wind noise above certain speeds, whether targa, convertible or hatch...

wavey I'm fortunate that this is a weekend toy for me so I can afford to act the child in terms of noise smile
In all honesty I have thought about the ACT big bore but the fireworks and flames get the better of me every time and someone also has to show the Lambos whos boss when it comes to noise evil
I do have everything in the garage to put back to standard though when I eventually get bored of it.

It also gives me time to put a pot of tea on as I can hear you and other Tvr friends from a mile away smile

Zippee, what year is your Targa? I understand the later cars have a different type of fixing?

Reason I ask is that Im on the lookout for a targa, although I have only ever been in a coupe. I think I would have the targa panels off quite often, as it would be a weekend car and I like teh wind in the hair redface)

Mines a 54 plate so has the later fixings. IIRC the older fixings were only on the early cars.

Mine is an April 2004 build and has the later fixings too. They came in when 04 came out (ish, this is TVR!). It is easy to spot new/older fixings - the old ones have side fixings, the newer are front/rear (you can probably already imagine the 'lift' under the front of the panels at speed without them being held tight at the front.

Yep, the best solution to the whistling targa panels is to take them out. I'm pretty sure my A/C does nothing worthwhile so as long as it's double-digit warm and not raining, the panels come out. It means I can enjoy my ASBO exhaust to the same degree as everyone else is loving it. It sort of limits things to 100mph (on a private road - as we've established) too, which is handy.

Hi,

You should be able to get the roof panels to be quieter - they are of the later type. I know from experience, it used to be my car smile

Zippee and targarama, thanks for the info.

I'm looking at a low mileage grey car currently for sale, but it's on an 03 so has older fixings and possible older engine components.

I'm waiting for a good low mileage 04 onwards targa.....

The silver one from Schmoo? Shame as looks a nice car otherwise. If you look at the interior pic you can just make out the side clip above the pass door that the early targa roof panels fitted into.

Well they grey one with even less miles! Perfect long term keeper.

Looked at the silver interior picks and couldn't spot the clips. Are the a lot noisier? Can't believe they used side fixings to start with anyhow!

Also, were those stick on door speakers a factory "upgrade"? Not a fan and would defrost be removed!!

If you look at the sides of this pick towards the front of the openings you can see the early style clips on the sides;

As for the speakers, I have them in mine and they were a factory option. In truth they're not as bad in the flesh but given the choice I'd have had them mounted down at the front of the door pockets as some owners have had done aftermarket. I wouldn't be put off a car just because of that though, the targas are rare enough that you can't be that choosy smile
