I have noticed that the steering feels a little notchy when turning when backing out of the garage, could this be the steering pump? If it is I shall buy a new one before I go to Cornwall next month. (Decided against Italy, French borders seem like a war zone right now...)

ETA - Fluid is on the Max marker on the reservoir..

Universal joints? Had a similar issue on my (non-PAS) Griff. Quick blast of spray grease from an aerosol and normal service resumed.

Most probably due to low voltage after cranking the cold engin. This has drained the battery for a bit, Steering then draws largish current again which the battrry is unable to supply.
Watch the battery voltage in the display as it happens. A dropping voltage would indicate the scenario above.

You can discard it as the cause when you experience the same after starting a hot engine with a known good and fully charged battery. This would hardly drain the battery and should easily be able to provide the power for the eHPAS motor.

High resistance at connections (inline fuses) could be another reason

Air in the system. Remove the cap and go lock to lock a few times see what happens? Could it be your new tyres have not scrubbed in yet?

Yep, Pug 106/Saxo electric PS pump. Can be had on eBay for way less than the usual suspects.

Have you thought about the tyres just drawing across the ground, at slow speed and cold going backwards the tread blocks will 'feel' like steering issues.

Cheers, it could be, never thought of that!
