Tarmora start up noises
Discussion
A friend on mind has just bought a Tamora from a dealer with around 40k on it. Its not had an engine rebuild in its life, so he had the engine checked out by a garage that's supposed to know the straight six, and it came back with a clean bill of health in terms of compression, cam followers and clearances etc. The engine does however rattle fairly badly on start up - he tells me its known piston slap on this engine- but its not a Japanese 2 stroke. It sounds more bearing like to me as it clears as the oil pressure rises. What's normal start up on these engines as its the first one Ive come across?
These engines are never quiet. Sounding rattly when cold, improving when warmed up and the clearances are taken up.
Even when warm expect a sewing machine tapping noise.
There are imminent engine failure noises.
Hard to tell if your mate has a problem without listening to it. But if a knowledgeable garage has listened to it and said that it's okay then it probably is.
Does your mate warm the engine up properly, keeping revs low until the oil temp builds up?

Your 40 miles from Str8Six. Ask them to check it out too just in case.
The comments about a sewing machine noise are spot on, particularly in colder weather.
It's also important to warm them up slowly, as mentioned before Generally 3500 rpm to 45 and gradually up to 65 degrees or car been driven for a while before pushing harder etc. Hopefully he's been advised.
Again Str8Six can advise on ensuring the car is maintained well
