I thought I'd put this out there as I know there are a few roadster owners I've made aware of this potential issue wink

When I looked for my first roadster I found nearly everyone had some sort of wear of the roof liners from the ends of the middle support bar.

Below are pictures of a NEW car with a few hundred miles on, the roof has only been down a hand full of times.
You can see already the felt stuck on the end of the crimped tube running from one side of the car to the other is alredy peeling off.
This exposed the sharp edges on the end of the tube.
Once exposed it rubs on the two internal liners either side of it, scratching a slot/hole in both liners.
When I was looking for my last car I saw one example that had started cutting through the out mohair roof cover.
CHECK YOURS!

I've also noted that the inside lining brushes against the two nipples on top of the roll hoops, during opening and closing. It looks like if the lining was to snag badly on them, it would tear a hole at a single stroke.

It does brush on those.
Never seen it wear there, but I have seen it rub dirt in to the liner.
I've treated both my roadsters with stain guard on the roof liner to prevent it marking.

Stupid question, but how do you check that without the roof hydraulics dying? (i.e. don't let go of the button)

Easy, ignition on, go to open it, stop it before it lifts tonneau, roll the black liner back to reveal the bar, inspect both sides, roll liner back, complete open/close operation.

I've found you have ~5 minutes before the system loses pressure.
But to be sure I just move the roof slightly after a couple of minutes to get it to reset the timer and rebuild the pressure.

Mine's going in for a repair tomorrow under warranty.

As you can see ive put gaffer tape over the offending strut to prevent further snagging.
This has happened on both sides of the roof but only noticable if you stop the opening of the roof halfway.
No damage to exterior but i assume this would wear a hole at a later date.

Many car manufacturers stipulate as to whether the car, when not in use, should be stored with the top up or down. What is the consensus here? Does the cutting of the roof liner happen because the car is stored one way or the other?

Always up mate biggrin

My thoughts on the reason why a puny peice of sticky tape over the end of the bar loosens with heat and when roof is lowered it pulls it off.
This exposes the end of the tube which gets caught on the inner liner.
Parts of my liner was wrapped round the bar.

Good work George - means I don't have to smile All sounds a bit complicated to me and it's a looooong way to Derby to have Rick press a button for my roof.

/might be able to get a butty though, today could be the day...

Had a look at the roof on the DB9 this morning, doesn't seem to be any signs of wear smile

yes Very odd indeed. Perhaps it is just hit and miss if it does it or not, there will undoubtedly be some volante owners out there affected by it, as I imagine some roadster owners that are completely unaffected by it.

Thanks for the heads-up. Just checked mine and the same has happened, plus quite a bit of wear though not thankfully through to the lining. Have bodged a solution with sponge and tape. Not nearly as elegant as yours but its hidden!
