V8V Wheel refurb
Discussion
Monsieur J,
Yes I use the same guys and the service was rather excellent so agree with your sentiments entirely, but .... the question I have (a genuine one that you or someone may be ableto answer) is when a dealer replaces / repairs something under warranty who actually pays?
In the world I work in, which is not the automotive industry on the whole, it usually the Original Equipment Manufacturer who foots the bill under warranty, sometimes covering all time and materials, etc....if it were the same in the dealership world then one might argue that being motivated to go that extra mile could be as a result of other than altruistic desires..., no?
But, on the other hand, maybe it's Xmas and I'm just plain wrong...

I believe you are absolutely correct...OEM will be picking up the bill...but who pays OEM?...you do when you purchase the car...so in a round about way you've already prepaid
For the OEM to remain profitable I'd guess that it builds in a % - perhaps on a weighted average basis - to the sale price of each car to cover such circumstances.
I'm pretty sure what is done to any of our cars all comes under OEM's customer satisfaction remit, in this case under the 'potential future niggles bracket'
Having reported earlier in the thread that I was having my V8V wheels refurbished by The Wheel Specialist in Burton I'm now in a position to give some feedback. I'd taken the wheels off myself and didn't get chance to put them back on and make sure the tyre pressure sensors were still working until yesterday.
Well everything was fine and the wheels now look like new again. Would have no hesitation in recommending this company. It all started fairly badly on the first morning when I got a phone call to say 3 of the 4 valves were seized and in the past someone had done a shoddy weld repair to one of the front inner rims. Thought I would be looking at a huge bill but by the end of the day I'd had another phone call to say they had sourced some valve and sensor housings from BMW allowing the sensors to be reused. The cost for 4 was £55.49 and the BMW part number 36.46792830. Aston only sell the whole assembly including sensors and valves for many hundreds of pounds!
The weld repair was redone and the welders initials stamped onto the rear of the hub of the wheel showing they stand by their workmanship. The cost here a very reasonable £35.
The cost of the refurb itself was £408 which isn't the cheapest around but nothing was added for the time it must have taken trying to remove and then cutting off the valve and sensor. I went for the low fleck Hi-Power Silver finish as it is the closest to the original finish. Time will tell how durable the finish is but I doubt it will be any worse than the original which were suffering significant amounts of corrosion after 5 and a half years.

Good to hear. I'm collecting mine tomorrow... From the Brummy depot... They said the same thing about my valve housings potential for giving problems, but they turned out ok...
Out of interest I sourced the part number from the German manufcaturere of the housings, and theyre only about £4 quid each.... Bu obviously we'd have to get them shipped over from Germany.....
Any chance of some pics of the wheels

Whilst it was there they replaced all 4 wheel centres FOC because they felt like it.
Stratstone Wilmslow just replaced all my wheels because the lacquer on the original diamond polished ones had started to go cloudy when they were just three months old. I bet the new ones came with new wheel centres that weren't needed ... good to know they went to a good home Whilst it was there they replaced all 4 wheel centres FOC because they felt like it.

Why, thank you very much young Michael.I'm also relieved to see they have managed to find a good home for the wheels with the hairline crack in them that I recently rejected.
One good turn, you know.....

It took a bit of polishing, but the cracks have nearly gone now, so I'm happy I'm also relieved to see they have managed to find a good home for the wheels with the hairline crack in them that I recently rejected.

... In the meantime I have 4 new standard centres going cheap if anyone wants em
Stratstone Wilmslow collected my car under the original warranty earlier in the week. It only needed a sidelight bulb replacing but I thought I would get the whole system checked - yes, I'm that lazy.Whilst it was there they replaced all 4 wheel centres FOC because they felt like it.
They also didn't like the slow speed that the glovebox was opening so they put a new mechanism on FOC.
Nor did they like a couple of the wheel nuts, so they replaced them too FOC.
They then valetted the car FOC.
It's really difficult to beat that kind of service from Keith, Alan and the team over there
anyway busy or quiet they are terrible replying to emails still!

So assuming that is the case, within a given time period, the OEM has an unknown liability on its books (well a maximum of replacement value I guess). So that's a darn good reason for limiting the years of warranty cover - bit like air miles liability on the airlines - and outsourcing the manufacture / supply of many bits....
Rather a tricky business making money out of cars....eh?
I did see some figures a while back that suggested that AM put aside something like £5k per car for warranty work. With my new wheels and side strakes I'm starting to make some major inroads into my bit of the fund.
The dealers will claim the work off AM, so it's in the dealers' interests to try to justify work under warranty
