Aston Vs Jag - are we slipping back?
Discussion
yeah, maybe thats where Lotus are going wrong...they make a car thats ok to look at, ok interior, expensive on a bhp per £ ratio, but handles fantastic, like a real drivers car should (and it does, I have driven one on track)
..so it appeals to a niche market of people who put 10/10ths driving ability above all else when looking for a new car
...thats not many people...and if you can really afford a £75K car, and you want that 10/10ths feel on track etc, you can usually afford a few cars in your fleet, you dont need to spend £75K on a compromised all rounder
for £75K I'll take mmm....a used Caterham for £20K, a 5 year old Vantage and a 5 year old Range Rover ..thats all bases covered for me

That's my thoughts Bogie. Randy is a good bloke but in the car trade, a good race driver and a massive Lotus fan. I can think why I'd buy a Jag over an Aston and certainly wouldn't put up with the look, ergo and finish of the Lotus -despite it being a good steer. Hell, The Cayman R is a better steer than the V8V but i wouldn't go back to a Cayman again, it was too accomplished.

Well I like mine, it does everything I want, feels more than quick enough and handles better than I can get the best out of either on track or on the road
ive "only" got an early 4.3 Vantage that Ive owned from 9 months old...you know the one that people say is "disapointing" and "slow"
but I dont care, because I really enjoy driving it, looking at it, listening to it, talking about it, tinkering with it, and even cleaning it (from time to time)
generally though I really like going places in it
I dont care what it says in a magazine or what racing drivers think of it, because Im old enough to make my own mind up ...
Jags will always be Jags..and Porsche are Porsche....I do like them too, in fact I like most cars in different ways...I like riding bikes too...in fact pretty much anything with an engine in it is fun
to be honest if I really like something, I dont really care what other people think, I get what I want
I guess that about sums it up for me

I don't think I could have put it any better myself.
Sums up my feelings / thoughts about my V8V

Anyway - who is this Randall chap, and what makes his opinion carry weight?

This really depends upon what the word "better" actually means to individuals - its subjective rather than the cold objectivity of numbers. ...
This is all that needs to be said. Many people often buy an allegedly "inferior" product and yet still think they made the right choice. If they didn't, we'd all be driving round in a Nissan GTR. Or BMW 330d. Or Toyota Avensis. Or something.
The Jags offer great bang for the buck. But the XKR, in my subjective opinion, doesn't look good enough on the outside or inside. It tries too hard.
If they built something that looks like the E-type, then the boys and girls at Gaydon would rightly cack themselves. But they don't and I suspect are unlikely to.
How long Aston can continue this though is very debatable. As others have intimated, they're against time with their current range...and the signs aren't great that imminent model replacements will move the game on.
Aston Martins are one of the ultimate asperational products......Jags are not..........driving an Aston is a privilege few will experience.......driving a Jag can be experienced by anybody with £500
But if the purpose of the post is to say that AM should not sit on the success of the present range of cars then I would agree.....let's all hope the next generation of Astons are cars we aspire to.

When I was 14 Jags were asperational to me, and still are for most of us peasants, £500 or no. It's not a privilege to drive an Aston, it is cerainly the mark of good fortune though.cml said:

Aston Martin voted the coolest brand for the 3rd year in a row......Jag came 23rd........it's just not cool to dive a Jag.....never has been....never will be (unless you wear sheepskin coats) .....it's a privillage and a mark of hard work .....not good fortune for most of us driving Astons
lol! jaguar has a few cars cooler than anything astom martin ever made.funny how the lucky ones always say it's "hard work".

you dont think that people have worked their asses off to be able to afford their cars ?
so its all down to "luck" ?
I didnt win mine in any lottery I know that for sure
lot's of people work their arses off everyday and can hardly afford busfare.so its all down to "luck" ?

we're all in the race but some people get a massive headstart.
I was questioning the word 'privilege' used in its literal meaning, that is to say a granted privilege because you're just so lovely and special. Hence it isn't because all you need is the cash. Besides anyone with real class doesn't buy their Aston, it comes with the family silver If you buy a car because some self-satisfied style gurus think its a cool brand then you a not a petrol head. As for 'it's never been cool to drive a jag' total guff, hang on a minute...
...you're a troll aren't you?
People who work hard and become wealthy tend to ascribe their riches to the hard work. To quote Rockfeller here - "The secret of success is to get up early, work late and strike oil"
A manual late 70s Vantage please, all blanked grills and quiet threats. Class, but carrying a big V8 stick.
Both firms are doing well, hurrahs all round I say.

Working hard is not working smart.
I came from a council estate and worked smart and hard.
That alone has enabled me to buy a new S to my spec.
Not some piece of luck winning.
BTW back on topic
IIRC Aston have always lagged behind on technology and been low on performance compared to the equivalents of the time.
Might be something to do with the tractor heritage
Or the fact owners care less about outright performance and comparing the P&J to other cars
