I can only read the first page of it?With the greatest of respect to the Jaguar, it looks absurd next to the Aston, too much bodykit. I guess its appeal is to the GTR crowd? The Aston looks suave and sophisticated, but I might even say a little dated next to it...
Good thing about Jags was always bang for buck. At 100 grand, that's gone. Some serious slightly used exotica is about for that money and I think it's a space Aston is supposed to occupy with Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Jaguar sits with Porsche and Maserati IMHO, no bad place to be.
Where will the new Lotus Esprit sit I wonder..?

I don't recall the mention of Rubbish and Aston in this article.
but the Jag just looks crap....that front end is nasty........i dont care if its the greatest car ever built (and the same goes for the Nissan GTR which probaly is))its only going to be driven by people who hold their knife's like a penI don't recall the mention of Rubbish and Aston in this article.

I think you can probably guess why this is back to life... The long-awaited F-Type.
Is it going to steal sales from the Vantage? Top of the range has an 8 speed auto, 495bhp, strict 2 seats, and is 80 grand plus toys. And the V6 with 340bhp is less than 60 grand for a thoroughly modern motor car, I very much doubt a second hand Vantage would comprehensively outrun it for the same money.
So the Vantage now has a cheaper rival in the F-Type and the DB9 has a MUCH cheaper rival in the XKR - which is has to be said, is long in the tooth now.
The DB9 has upped it's game with the most recent incarnation and actually isn't overpriced for what it is. Jag seem to have added every piece of bling they have to bump the XKR-S's price beyond 100k, rarified territory for Jaguar. I think the new DB9 is ahead of the XKR-S, even putting pricing to one side.
I don't think the Vantage is ahead of the F-Tyope though, not any more. When is the new Vantage due..? If it were my choice, I would have the Aston because I love Astons, but if you had no interest in either brand, I wonder how many will choose the F-Type? It's just so... new!
Comparing the XKR to the Vantage is hard as you effectively get a DB9-class car for Vantage money. But where does the F-Type fit in? It is, in it's top spec, on paper, better than the Vantage or the aging XKR.
And the raison d'etre of the this thread was always to try and ignore the perceived snob value that Aston has versus Jaguar. The question is still; do they build better cars now?

Am not sure I understand Jags pricing structure on the F-Type compared to the XK. There is cross-over between the two ranges which will lead to some buyer confusion, I think. Of course you expect some crossover at the top end (of the F-Type) but it also seems to occur at the middle and bottom of the range, also. Obviously, they are trying to sell it for what they can get for it but I can't help thinking they missed a trick. If they had pitched it £10k cheaper across the board I think they may have had a seriously successful car (in terms of sales quantity).
The other thing to note is that whilst the F-Type roadster is a pretty thing for sure, the coupe (due next year) looks one hell of an ugly beast - not sure how many of those they will sell.
Anyhow, back to the question...the answer is probably yes, but would I have one (over an Aston), definitely not.

I know it's wrong and probably says something about the sort of person I am but whenever I see someone in a Jag XK et al I feel that they would swap for an Aston in heartbeat. Never had a Jag although did consider an XKR once but only because I couldn't afford an Aston in those days. Did once get an XK8 driver flash me though when I was in the DB7 because he thought I too was in a Jag!! I wish my reactions had been quicker so I could have given him the finger, cheeky bd.

Your right. I was that person in the XKR, not the one flashing you!, but the one who would swap to an Aston in heartbeat. That was a couple of years ago and obviously I did swap.
Yesterday, I drove past an identical car to my old jag (black XKR convertible 20inch wheels). My first thought was "that looks nice", my second thought was "I'm glad I'm in my current car and not that one". Says it all, I guess.
For me this is not a black and white issue, ie is one car better than the other, because it is very subjective.
There will be a group of Aston people who will stil buy the Vantage, because its an Aston. There will be a group of people who are floating voters and may be swayed by the numbers for boasting rights in pubs and other I can wee higher than you contests and go for the Jag.
The Jag will take some sales from Aston I believe but not catastrophically, because its not an Aston.
However, it's yet another warning shot to AM that they have to keep their game up, and as has been said on many a thread here, either find the odd billion down the back of the settee, or take on a strategic partner because the gap will get wider and wider and die hard Aston owners fewer and fewer in that circumstance.
At the moment, for me the Aston, no question. This argument is going on the Porshe forum too because the F Type has been pitched against the Boxster market and even the 911. It's not just us!
Edited to add Mrs Steve doesn't like the Jag at all - but she fell in love with the Vantage when she saw it. This from somebody who knows bot all about cars!

There is only one reason I had an XKR and it's the same as above
But we're now in a world where the top spec F-Type costs the same as a Vantage S, give or take. One is a modern, 8 speed, high tech, 495bhp, all the toys, has the heritage of the E-Type to trade on and is a beauty to behold.
The other is an Aston Martin.
Is it enough? If it was my 85 grand and I HAD to have a new car, I'm not sure. My DB9 cost me 50k and is worth a little less perhaps. There is nothing I'd swap it for at double that price. But in NEW car world... :scratchin:

It's an interesting and subjective discussion.
If had £85K to spend on a NEW car (which I wouldn't!) my heart wold still say - get the Aston!!
If I listened to my head and looked at depreciation and residuals it'd say - get the Aston!!
I may of course be biased but I think that the XKR and F Type are both excellent cars and the XF is extraordinary value!
However, for £85K... I'd get a used DBS any day!
Instant game winner parked next to ANY Jag.
