well i think it is a great club, i have got off my backside and organised 10 events so far, mostly touring all over Europe with the "Viagra" club (Virage In All Guises Road Association) last year was a trip to the ring and spa and yes we passed a few castles but only ever at very high speed.
this year i managed organise 82 vanquish in the same spot for an event then got 20 on a day out as a featured car in a concours and got great advice by Amoc all along the way.

all this nonsense about elitist is just exactly that. there are those in clubs that like black tie events and those that don't. if you don't, don't go to them but don't bh and whine about that they are held. i have never been to one personally nor ever likely to but just because they are there doesn't mean to say there is any elitist thing going on.
Do we all have to be the same ? i am guessing that many that enjoy those events are not likely to enjoy anything i organise that's for sure but none of them feel the need to bang on about it.

yes an AMOC concourse event does have a lot of wing commanders walking around going "arf arf" a fair bit and talking about "cabbage crates over the briney" and stuff but they never intimidate me because i am me. they are different is all and we have different wants from the club but so what. because you dont like what they want and they talk posh tt a lot they are "elitist" for some reason. utter balderdash.

The cost for membership is too high but the committee are looking into different ways to do this without bankrupting the club itself in one go. They are well aware that you cannot continue by just putting the price up and that fresh thinking is needed and i am sure that within the next year or so you will see new initiatives to that effect.

there are plenty of places you can go to enjoy your aston, i am looking forward to going on one here next year to meet people, also looking forward to some organised by AMOC and one euro tour i am doing next year myself.

Both the web sites are free to use so no biggy to me. Get out what you might want to put in.

For the record, Webby doesn't own the AMOC site, he manages it on the members behalf and does a good job. it has moderators to run it like here except with less censorship. If he chooses to use Latin from time to time i don't see that as any different to me using slang. Some here have totally mastered fluent bks but i dont mind. Its a choice. Thankfully we still get one.

if you think AMOC is good value, good for you, if you dont, good for you too.

10 out of 10 for a quality rant and the contextual use of term 'utter balderdash' Sir....I salute you! hehe

Have been a long time member of PCGB and see a number of similiar problems, much like in any car club. I've been in numerous clubs over the years and am considerng AMOC but it is a lot of money, especially considering that a quarterly publication unlike porsche which is monthly for half the fee.

At 48, I seem to be in the younger catergory (blimey!) and am considering a vantage so reading this thread from start to finish would make me approach with caution. I enjoy the drives, european hoons and le mans type sorties so would be looking for that sort of thing. The biggest frustration is the old north/south divide, its the same with porsche, with very active and well run regions but the major events are predominantly southern based. I will keep an weathered eye on this thread.....

I don't really see that age has much to do with it (44 going on 25 if anyone's counting). I'm more interested in the cars and talking to people who share a similar interest (cars). Hell even my 13 yr old daughter likes the amoc (and the odd ph) events

Heres a link the thread on AMOC:-

The comments about the wing commander jargon are pretty funny, but that's not what I have experienced or would find an indicator of the individuals feeling of superiority over others, my buddy Len is ex RAF and a great fellow and is of the Battle of Britain era, in fact he was really thrilled when I bought an Aston Martin.

Using Latin as an attempt at elevating yourself self over others in an online exchange is , as is the use of the terms Hoi Palloy and Riff Raff, both of which I was told were used by an certain AMOC member when describing non-AMOC members who constantly use the forum.

AMOC aside , I really like the car and am enjoying owning it, me and the Mrs.have gone on many enjoyable drives in it and have received nothing but positive comments.

Exactly. If "younger" Aston owners don't join the AMOC because of a perception (rightly or wrongly) that the membership is old, then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Vanky,

Extremely well said. Personally, I never translated Webby's use of Latin as condescending. I can see how it could be taken that way, but IMO it's simply part of his VERY dry sense of humo(u)r.

Lifted this from another forum as I'm not literate enough to write it up this well

Pomposity

"The benefits of a ‘classical education’, they say. But is there anything more annoying than those who drop in Latin phrases and confuse erudition with pomposity? I saw that hideous snob Rees Mogg do precisely this on a documentary on class recently and it made me wretch. Enoch Powell was the last politician who felt the need to pepper his speeches with this nonsense. Latin remains the cold, dead language of exclusivity and exclusion. It’s a peacock’s tail, the luxury of being able to ignore utility for superfluous acquisition of a useless and purely academic exercise. It says, subliminally, to hell with vocational subjects, I’m not ‘trade’. The dirty truth of the matter is that Latin has long been used as a marketing device by largely private schools to advertise their posh pedigree and attract parents of a conservative bent to cough up the fees. quid pro quo"

(I'm 55 years old BTW)

What an odd comment. What on Earth gave you that impression? You made a point and I replied and that was the end of as far as I was concerned. If you want a conversation I'm all ears! smile

I started to read the AMOC thread and probably did not reach the heated point, if it did become heated.

One contribution caught my attention though;

'Hi, We cannot claim to be environmentally friendly if we own and run an Aston Martin.'

My own Aston Martin uses less petrol, and pollutes less each year, than my very tame daily driver. (Work it out).

The Government (and the AMOC contributor) obviously think otherwise, and consequently charge me far less in road tax for my daily driver.
