As part of my Aston tinkering learning curve can anyone who knows for sure give me some information on the 2012 model year tyre pressure monitors.

After changing a wheel is the TPM valve self learning to the car or do they have to be programmed to the car.

Can the TPM valves be changed from wheel to wheel and reused or are new seals required every time, if so are these readily available.

Aston price is approx £110, can these be sourced elsewhere.

Can the system be easily turned off and on, if I run wheels with no TPM valves. I believe the winter wheel / tyre package kits only have ordinary valves.

Any good information much appreciated.

Lots of questions, so I will start where I can.

TPM can be changed from wheel to wheel - YES, painful as you have got to work on 8 wheels and tyres......

You can run without TPM and you get a flashing light and a warning text on the dash that can be switched off using the read button (not the flashing orange symbol)

If you fit new ones, they need to be programmed.

I swapped my wheels yesterday for ones without tpms and was expecting to see error messages, I'd even bookmarked another thread ready to start shorting out the monitotring unit...........but nothing happened, no warning or error messages, nothing. Don't know if the unit has to detect the sender units in order to work or if it's just broken, whichever it's a result.

In answer to your question there a number of aftermarket products that can be programmed to your car for considerably less than new from AM. If you know the transmitter frequency there are some on eBay for about £15 each.

Edit: £25 for 4 here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/gtldpearce/m.html?item=2...

Edit again: According to a thread on AMOC 315Mhz for UK/ European cars

So it would appear to be the case then that if you change over to a different set of wheels, even though they have TPMs fitted, you still get the warning unless they are programmed to the car.

Probably a silly question, but is it possible to have multiple sets of TPMs programmed to the car so that two sets of wheels can be used as requireed.

Can they only be programmed by a dealer or is it an esy DIY type job.

My last car just learned the tpms when it was driven.

A bit of an update, aparently Aston now use a Beru TPM system. The guy at my local tyre shop says that any recent Beru system he has seen on Audi etc all relearn automatically with no programming required.
Has anyone experienced this yet on a 2012 model year car?

Which car do you have? AFAIK, Aston changed the TPMS setup for some 2012 MY cars, but not all. As long as you have a set of sensors linked to the car, supposedly the new setup can recognize these sensors after a short distance. With the old Smartire setup, which is still on my 2012 MY V12V, the system will NOT recognize the sensors unless they are reprogrammed to the car with each wheel swap, and unfortunately, only a dealer can do that (or so I am told).

EDIT - just saw the above post, and yes, the new system is Beru, but not on all cars...

My car is a 12.25 model year standard V8 Vantage, with the bigger V8S wheels and brakes etc.

I'm not a massive fan of the stock V spoke wheels and might go for the 10 spoke forged optional extra wheels, but they are very expensive.

I might put winter tyres on the existing wheels, but I would want to use TPMS, I don't want the warning light on all the time. I also don't want to be going to the dealer every time I change wheels.

Do you know how to tell what system is fitted, without dismounting a tyre.

Look in the passenger footwell under the dash - the Smartire TPMS unit is there and the name is on it. Can't tell you where the new Beru units are located, though.

Apologies for hijacking thread but how do you get the tyre pressures to show on the display.

They only brought in this feature 2 days ago ...

Only kidding. Congrats on the new car, the new tyre pressure reading is a big improvement on the earlier version which looked very after-market . Just scroll through till you reach the TPMS screen
