Colours - Are the dealers out of touch
Discussion
I think dealers are looking to chose colours other than silvers or greys. In the past few weeks Grange (Exeter) have had a Royal Amethyst Vantage as a stock car and their current Vanquish stock is MF White with a red interior, Volcano Red with a cream interior and black with a black interior and fabulous yellow stitching. It will be interesting to see how quickly they are sold. Quite rightly I do think that people are not prepared to pay considerably more to spec their own car when they can buy dealer stock with £10k off so what really needs to happen is that less cars are built for dealer stock which should lessen the discounting they have to do - well in theory it should but may impact in the short term on build numbers for AM.
The reason the V12VR has such a variety of colours chosen is that 1) no discounts were available and 2) many of the owners are buying them as keepers and therefore are less concerned about any possible impact on trade in values.

I don't buy into the whole "safe colour future value" thingy. Here's why....... A dealer told me recently how he took in a banana yellow Vantage which not only went on the forecourt, but was elevated on a plinth to purposely make a bit of a statement. O.K, it stuck around for a while, but then one day, a fella from t'up North comes down to see it. Thinking that he was going to wipe a few grand off the windscreen price because of the colour, he pushed for a deal. However, the dealer knew that the bloke had driven a couple of hundred miles to see the car so as soon as he showed interest, the dealer politely explained that it was a rare colour; probably the only one available and so, "sorry sir, but I couldn't possibly budge on the price."
Yep..........he bought it.
Just so long as the majority keep buying the "safe" colours, us that go off the beaten track, with a little bit of sales B.S, will be just fine.
P.S IMO my California Sage Green Vantage is simply stunning.

Whilst I tend to argue on the side of many of the comments in this thread, there is a counter argument, re: exterior colours in particular. In fairness even in the years of DB7 and early DB9 production when discounts weren't available and large numbers of cars were customer specced, a high percentage were still grey/silver/black, partly because they were the colours the factory launched and showcased the cars in. The factory in more recent years have had a tendency to launch and showcase their cars in far more adventurous colours and the dealers have followed suit, as to an extent have customers.
Lets also not forget that Astons do tend to look great in silver/grey/black and one of the -ves now is simply the sheer number of cars in those colours rather than that they don't look good on their own. I didn't give a second though to resale or what other people may think when deciding on ceramic grey for my V12VR - I looked at lots of more 'adventurous' options and simply decided I love that colour.
Interiors are a different matter - bearing in mind the sheer number of colours offered with nil or a relatively modest premium, the incredibly high percentage produced with black interiors (though not so much an issue on brightly coloured cars) is a huge shame, because so many of the cars look so much better with a non-black interior - not just the rich colours themselves but the individuality they offer and the fact it highlights how much of the car is covered in leather - go for coloured leather in many cars and it highlights how much of the interior is black plastic but on an Aston, it highlights how much really is in leather, especially with the leather humps on the soft tops
Even if you put to one side very light colours for their impracticality and two tone which can be marmite, particularly in the 2 seaters where I feel they tend to look too fussy for my personal taste, their are so many cars in the showrooms, even customer specced, crying out for a tan, brown, dark green, navy or dark red interior it's close to a sin ! All IMHO of course !

very interesting Alwin (even if I didn't enjoy reading how many others are in CG !). Do you have any more breakdowns, like how many for each country or in RHD/LHD ?13 x Onyx Black

Would love to know (I think !) about the interior and other options on the CG cars !!!
Also, whilst I know the red RHD & grey LHD cars are not considered production cars and I imagine will be destroyed or kept for posterity, what do we know about the white car with red CF & interior ? It has been referred to as Dr Bez's car but it's neither numbered nor yet in his possession - it's still being used as a show car, certainly for now. Do you know if it is in fact to be considered part of the 101 and/or be Dr Bez's car ?

I love Sunburst yellow http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
It is one of the very few colours where a black interior looks best (albeit with contrast yellow stitching)

Luna - it just looks like any other car with a yellow wrap on http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
I may have gone the "safer" colour route were my purchase not going to be a long term proposition. Also, as the dealer gave me the same deal on my own spec of car as other in-stock cars in the dealer network, I went with Magma Red / Cream Truffle.
Not only do I think my car looks fantastic (of course I would think that) but the reaction of the general public would seem to confirm that something a bit different is noticed and appreciated.
It is great to see that quite a few of the recent purchases, both second hand and new listed on this forum have been less common colours. Maybe purchasers are becoming a little more adventurous ?
Don't get me wrong, the silvers, greys and blacks do look good, but isn't variety the spice of life ?

FWIW, my V8V Coupe is Onyx with Obsidian -- black on black. I bought it as a keeper, so resale had nothing to do with it. I actually tried hard not to get black, mostly because it is so difficult to maintain. But, whenever I saw Onyx, I just loved it. Ultimately, I couldn't find a combination that I thought actually looked better, so that made the decision. Also, in part perhaps because it would be a keeper, black will always look good - it's never "in" or "out" of style. It's classy and elegant, and always will be. Black leather, well maintained, tends to age well, too -- as a keeper, this was important to me. With red stitching, red calipers and red tail lights, to me, it simply looks fantastic. Had I had the chance to see some more adventurous colors, (Mako, for one), I might have done it differently, and sometimes when I see pics of some stunning colors I think perhaps I should have. But then, I look at my car, and that Onyx is nothing short of spectacular, and any doubts are erased. I love the variety, but the blacks and greys just do look great.
