I started my car up this morning and having driven it for a couple miles i began to hear a contionous rattling noise from the front of the car (even when driving).and in neutral

The noise gets louder when I press the clutch down. I only changed my clutch a year ago and am concerned I will have to shell out on it again.

Can anyone shed any light on what the problem may be or experinced anything similar.....

Cheers

Hi Maverick

Appreciate your response, its like a rattling/grinding noise - and increases in volume once the clutch is engaged

Thanks

It might be your clutch thrust bearing, if so it's another clutch overhaul.

Drofanvi could be on the right trail. The problem is that noises are very hard to diagnose or guess at when you can't hear the noise and are going on a description. How often do the clutches go in V8's ? A year seems awfully short a time period to have a clutch go ........

Does the noise happen when you're just driving ?

yes the noise constant when driving but just increases a touch ( like when your bliping a car from third to second) in volume once i put clutch down

someone said it could be brake pads worn out n grinding or maybe no oil or no enegine coolant

i hardly drive the car and i dont drive it rough so for the clutch to go so soon after it has been replaced it is unthinkable

What is the mileage? Is it serviced? Funny question I know, what I mean is, is it actually serviced or does some dealer wipe an oily rag over and stamp your book?

If you are not driving it much and it's more of a Sunday car, oil and coolant do not realy sound viable issues. Brakes could be an issue. Mine looked great until I changed them, then found they were in a terrible condition, but they did not make a noise ....... wink

If brakes were making a noise (I'm assuming they are not Ceramic), then the brakes would be in dire condition and you'd know .......

Has anything been done to the car? Like you had the undertray off for some reason and the noise started after the service/event?

Did the noise just come straight out of the blue?

It might be worth getting a stethacope from eBay, cost me about £5.00 and it helped me no end when I was searching for the noise from the engine ...... Having said that, does the noise happen when the car is NOT moving?

Questions, Questions, Questions ................

Sounds about right. Possible incorrect installation or a failed spring or bearing, this has nothing to do with wear and tear. Who installed it last year, go straight back to them. They should warranty their work.

nothing has been done to the car ..one min it was fine next the noise started happen.

the aa came out an said it was the clutch at fault

im stunned that this is the case

i had a new clutch installed in novmber 2011 and have spoken to the guys who have done it they said they cant do anything about it outside warrenty.

have had nothing but bad experience with this car since ive owned and if i had the chance again i would have never of bought this car.

not sure what to do cant afford to shell another 3k on a clutch

Sorry to hear that frown

£3k, wow I didn't know that was the cost. I don't have a manual so not well informed. Generally I understand it is the thrust plate that breaks etc, can not just the thrust plate be changed? I'm certain the actual clutch would be fine after such a short time.

Is the cost £3k? What about other garages? Surely it can be done a lot cheaper than that?

The boys that did it for you before must be, "really really nice people", to leave you in the lurch like that mad . I understand its 12 weeks out of warranty, but surely can they not help at all?

Did they offer ANY help ?

Did you have the clutch replaced at an authorised dealer or independent, or was it a general garage? Whichever, and I hope you went via the former for a clutch replacement, you should take it back and find out if it is the clutch causing the noise.

Any other discussion here is just supposition. There is only one way you will find the cause and that should be an authorised dealer or a respected independent.

they said they would charge me £100 to have a look.

i will have to take it to a aston martin dealer to have a second opinion. But once i get this issue resolved will be looking to get rid asap.

i need to start doing research on getting a new clutch fitted.

you would think they would be kind enough to sort it out but only the ££££ matters in this world

Real shame about the clutch..

I'd give Bamford Rose a call and ask them about costs to replace the clutch, you might even ask about the lightweight flywheel too as I've heard it transforms the car..

That is if you decide to stick it out a little longer, things might improve?

You should have taken it to a dealer or independent in the first place. Generic garages are not the place to take Astons. Live and learn I guess. To charge you to take a look is just crap service. Take it to whichever independent is nearest to you and ask them to give it a good check for all faults and investigate the noise. If it is the clutch then whichever garage did it has to provide some warranty for their work. If they refuse to rectify bad workmanship take then to court.

Once you get it checked out you may find you have a fundamentally good car so stick with it a while longer.

To the OP...

Have a look at this thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

You should be able to see in there - somewhere - that to "look" at a V8V clutch requires dropping the plates under the car, then the torque tube needs to come out.

AML quote £4200 to replace a V12V clutch and there's about 8 hours labour in it. A V8V clutch is a wee bit cheaper and a wee bit less labour, but it's not a cheap or quick fix.

So, for £100 you are being taken up the garden path. It's too little to actually look at the clutch and too much if they are decent people. I suspect they would just drive it for a bit and then tell you the clutch is kaput. Then tell you that you drive like you stole it and it's your fault...

I suggest you take the car up to Bamford Rose and then see what they say. They'll show you what they do and be able to assist with kicking back on the other garage.

I used Mike and the guys at Bamford Rose to beat up AML and give me a free clutch for my V12V - thereby saving me £4200 less a pint or two for the guys...

Good luck

To be honest..... And I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, as you're now being told its the clutch.... But as the owner if it was possible that it could have been out of oil, water, or pads on the metal, and you were still driving it around without a clue.... This is a worry...

Brake pads would give you a dashboard warning, and unless you're a 17 year old girl, you know how to check the fluids... Right? If not, look in the manual and get under the bonnet!

You haven't said whether you took it to a random generic garage or not? If so, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Lesson learned. It's a specialist car, not a 1991 Ford Fiesta. If they've installed it wrongly, good luck getting your money back or proving it, but an Aston specialist can help with that.

A dealer will tell you that you need a new clutch again, get it to your closest decent independent for analysis. But check the fluids first!!
