At the DVLA auction today, I saw HU11 CTY go for £48,000.00. It was between a phone bidder and some bloke at the auction, who was getting more and more annoyed as the bidding went up in £1000 increments. He won the pissing competition in the end but a stubborn determination to blow the thick end of £50k ensured that his pride was left in tact.

Must have been the lead of Hull City Council and thought it would look good on his mayoral Daimler...

I'm being a bit dim but what is that meant to be? Hull City is about as close as I can get.

HU11 CTY would look stupid on an Aston. Even in Hull!

I am at a loss as to how anyone's pride can be left in tact, by blowing £50k on a piece of shallow , crass tat.

If I could have found a "sarcastic smilie" I would definitely have used it.

You are not alone.
Perhaps buying a new car for £48,000 might be better.
He could then have HU13 CTY for nothing. smile

I think Private Plates suit certain cars very well, and appeals to those who covet such gauche trinkets.

They should be part of the options list when speccing the likes of an Evoque, a RRS, Bentley Continental, Saxo, Subaru or X5.

The Aston should be spared this fate.....no need shout.....not everyone's a Property Developer init.

And that's the thing about this type of auction. Saw some perfectly good plates with just numbers and two initials not make the reserve and then other similar plates go for £5K. If you're the only one in the hall that's interested, then you'll get what you want. As soon as someone else has the same initials and some cash to burn, then it can all go a bit nuts. God fun, though.

I still fail to see the issue. A majority of private plates only mean something to the owner. It's only letters and numbers. Personally id prefer nothing at all but not an option in the uk.

Mr. D. V. La does like to underbid.
It does help just a little, with our nations debt problem though. smile

Just for the record, my Aston has a private plate, V12 with my initials. It does not however intimate that I am an imaginary spy to 'make people smile' smile

Rather than start anew thread. I'll bump this one. Have meant to bring it up for a while. What is with the following 'combinations' ?

M 1 5

M 1 6

I can only think the owner thinks this is some sort of play on MI5 / MI6 - or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

Also registrations I've seen recently and thought why ?

Anything with XXX at the end. They all like the film Triple X / Vin Diesel ?

And then more bizarrely in my opinion: SS 55 SSS or similar BS 55 SSS or other combinations of letters looking like a number and vice/versa.

WHY ?!?!?
