A different insurance question. I promise

Hi all
I am being told that it is virtually impossible to get insured on a car worth over 100k if it is kept on a drive where it can be seen from the road overnight. Tried all the usual brokers.
Is this impacting anyone on here or has everyone got a garage? I don't as the previous house owners converted it into a bloody gym. Which is just a waste of a decent garage!
Oh bizarrely if I go on to go compare this doesn't seem to be an issue for admiral, or elephant insurance.
Thanks
Josh

Have you tried Locktons?
There are plenty of people here that keep thier cars on a drive - not sure how many can be seen from the road though... Supposedly in a garage is one if the worst risks. Some people deliberately keep their car out of a garage, in the main road so it's harder to tell what house it belongs to - for insurance reasons.

Its not a problem for Admiral as you say, in fact if you run a quote for Admiral it is usually cheaper parked on the drive instead of the garage.
So apart from Admiral will not give you an agreed value policu what is wrong with using them? You can stil get your car repaired at the graage of your choice, they speak English (technically Welsh) in the call centres (phone them in the morning) and are always helpful especially when you need to make a claim.

Thanks both.
Yes tried locktons, aviva, Zurich and about 6 others. Only quote I got was 4k with 2k excess. Hence my surprise when last night I tried go compare and got 3 yes's from admiral, elephant and diamond!
So what are they not worried about that the usual high performance insurers are?

Hi
Age 42. No accidents, points or claims since 1994 (touch wood). Nice area big drive. RRS, mini countryman, and vantage all there currently And easily insured. Talking to a broker again yesterday he said part of the problem was I was going from vantage to vanquish and that contributed to higher risk in the eyes of the insurers.

Ditto and what is wrong with that?
I pay 1100-ish with Locktons but with a 5000mile cap and no commute.
I think the premium may be becuase a) value on the Vanquish (MkII I presume) and a full SDP and commuute?
Ah, I made an assumption, I take it Josh you are getting an Aston, hence still got a clean licence. It wont stay clean for long when you get one.I pay 1100-ish with Locktons but with a 5000mile cap and no commute.

Hi all
Been a vantage owner for a year. Also had a vantage from 09 through to march 11 then a break until march 12. Love to convert back to a garage but there is a false floor etc in there.
Anyway have now found insurance on a new DB9. Not quite the vanquish but still a step up from the vantage. Just need to find the right car.

Still just rip it out or is your wife saying keep it Bloody drives me mad people who convert perfectly good places to house cars into living space simply because they didn't buy a big enough house! RichB said:

Lol. What's funny is that it was big enough for a gym upstairs! The house has 6 bedrooms and there were only 4 people living here! The gym / garage has a remote control door which still works but instead of rolling up to reveal a p&j now reveals a lovely raised floor and of course my wife's treadmill, cross trainer big ball you sit on etc! She said it was shame to waste the work they had put into the room. Still if there is a deal to be done on an unregistered DB9 then I don't think I have the right to consider this a bad week in the end.

If it was a garage before, it can be converted back. IMHO if you leave an Aston out on the drive or the street, except in central London, where everyone does it, you are asking to have it nicked, and quite probably your house broken into as well. I hope that you have got really strurdy gates, CCTV and lighting on sensors.Hi
Unfortunately a conversion back is lots of work as the conversion was done the same time as a kitchen extension so all the waste pipes for utility room, sink in the pantry, sinks in kitchen etc go out into the "garage" under the decking. However been as Aston owner for three years out of last four and understand the importance of security. House is "fully loaded" . But I won't live my life in fear. As many on here do I work very hard for what I have and there doesn't seem to be much point if there is no treat to make up for the ridculous hours working or the stress associated.
Best regards
Josh

Or keep the raised floor, plastered walls etc. Paint a suitable colour and you could have the best ever heated damp free space for the car. Could you add a glass wall into the kitchen then you can see the P&J whilst making a coffee Think along the lines of Chris Evans setup on a smaller scale haha
