Sort of. I had a local exhaust shop weld me up a lightweight system with a minimal amount of silencing...
It was awful, just a blaring, timeless noise. Aston spent time on the design of those backboxes to get the sound right.
Give it a go though, and don't worry about welds, even dubious welding is fine these days for non-important parts.
