Just been watching the race on Eurostar, and they have just confirmed that the Aston driver Simonsen has died as a result of the crash in his Vantage.
Horrendous!

Yes I was watching.... It did not appear to be that critical but passenger shell was out of shape...they have not shown exactly what happened and if it was a shunt or involvement with another vehicle...savage that somebody dies...

Very sad, looks like a wheel on the slippery kerb maybe? Although that does seem to change direction very quickly? I am sure the in-car will tell the story, very, very sad.

It is very difficult to see what actually happened. I have so much respect for these guys . We were so close to the McNish crash 2 years ago, it was horrific, yet he walked away from it.

Very sad. I hope the rest of the event will be ok and look forward to Le Mans finishing without further incident. Really brings home to you how dangerous Motorsport can be.

I also couldn't help but be reminded how lucky Lisa & Simon were. To spin Purdey, write her off plus a van too on a busy road and walk away with neither of them suffering any injury at all - not even a bruise, a scratch or a seatbelt burn was incredible.

Drive safe guys.

Completely shocked. Heard them talking after the crash and thought they said he was conscious when they got him out of the car. Must have been a difficult decision to continue. Hope they honour Allan and win.

Testimony to Allan as www.astonmartin.com:

Le Mans, 22 June 2013: It is with great shock and sadness that the Aston Martin Racing Team confirms that an accident occurred shortly after the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans at around 15:09 hrs CET today (22 June) when the No 95 Vantage GTE driven by Allan Simonsen left the track at Tertre Rouge.

Tragically, and despite the best efforts of the emergency services in attendance, Allan’s injuries proved fatal.

Aston Martin Racing Managing Director, John Gaw, said: “On behalf of all of us at Aston Martin Racing, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individuals, and families whose friends or loved ones were involved in today's terrible tragedy.”

Aston Martin Racing will not make any further comment until the precise circumstances of the accident have been determined. Next of kin have been informed.

Following the ACO’s media statement concerning the tragic death of Aston Martin Racing driver Allan Simonsen, and at the specific request of his family, the team will continue to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in tribute to Allan

So bladdy sad. It was wet on the track and those 'edges' offer even less grip don't they. So bladdy sad.
