Any advice on this subject....I have bought her a small 60 plate Chevrolet spark with 995cc engine....been quoted stupid amounts to insure her as a learner then double that when she passes her test.....anyone got any recommenations?...or the best method of keeping costs down.....?

Teach her to speak Albanian, don't register the car and don't bother with insurance?

Not helpful, I know...... wink

Fitting a black box and not allowing the car to be used after 10pm can reduce premiums by 40% having you as a named driver will help .....other than that its going to hurt

Whatever you do it still remains expensive. There is a list somewhere of insurers that give discounts for having Pass Plus. We are with Admiral and they did not give anything. They didn't even give a discount when our eldest passed her IAM. We'll be insuring elsewhere come renewal time.

Tony, I went through this with my eldest son. Corsa 1.2, initial quote £4600. A snip, I hear you say. Went with a compaNY called 'insure the box', dropped to £2.5k. No curfew, just monitors driving style and awards extra mileage on policy. He's now in his 3rd year with them on an MX5, with good competitive rates.

In short, £1500 is good for pre test IMO.

When I was 23 (20 years ago) I bought a Lotus Esprit and it cost me £1k to insure it as I recall ( I did have full NCD ). I wonder what that would cost today ?

Funny enough I'm doing exactly the same thing.
No1 daughter has her heart set on a mini.
Quotes on L plates are in the region of £800.

After she passes her test they rocket to nearly 3k.

What I have managed to find out so far is that if you put both parents on her policy it drops somewhat.
I also looked into the Admiral black box thingy. It says on their website that it Dosnt impose a curfew.

It monitors the driving style and you can drive at anytime of the day or night.
I've yet to speak to the regarding what happens if she does inadvertently exceed the speed limit or what happens if they think she's driving to oftan at night.

I'm going to have to do some ringing around when I get back home to find out the finer details.

We have had the same dilemma with both of our daughters while learning to drive.
Try Collingwood learner driver cover. The rate is about as sensible as we could get at the time but it only lasts until they pass the test. Then you have to bite the bullet and start the search for a good (?) premium all over again.
Alternatively, Adrian Flux have a young driver policy as well. Couldn't comment on that one though.

I'm paying a grand with LV on a Ford Puma, worth about a grand for an 18 year old learner, plus her 21 year old sister, who passed at 18. Same as it costs me for the Aston, but less than I have to pay for the 18 year olds Honda 750...

Our's, who has a 1.6 Mini, is with the wife's Admiral multicar policy. She gets no claims too.

Just google Provisional Marmalade. Can renew a month at a time. From what I recall we paid about £80.00 for the month. It is not connected with your own policy either
