Ouch. It's already nerve wracking enough buying an Aston, especially a cheap one, without it being associated with this kind of gore.

Not much Michael, except the contributors' opinions seem to be, of a black DB9 which has a low price.

As the subject of a repaired car is being discussed elsewhere,
it was just a thought.

Thanks for all the advice and cautions. Would the service invoice have advisories on and would everything be checked at a service?

Could it be he's had it in for a service, spent 3k on it and been told that it's got a lot more serious problems?

From talking to the seller it currently has outstanding finance on it which will xfer to the new car he is getting.

I know this can be a red flag, as really it would need to be settled on this car before I buy it surely?

Does anyone know how the buying process would work? Normally I guess I'd pay the finance company direct and then pay the balance to him but if he doesn't want to pay off the finance how could I know it was transferred at the right time? If he didn't have the new car yet - I'd be driving it away with finance still on it?!

The outstanding finance is not a problem.....I recently purchased a vehicle with outstanding finance. You go to collect the car and call the finance company they give you a settlement figure which you pay over the phone with a debit card.......you give the seller the balance of the money

If your really interested in the car then speak to the company who serviced it two weeks ago.......they should be able to give you the low down on it

Just an update to this.

I went to view, test drive the car , checked out the service history by contacting chiltern Aston and the Dealership that sold the car to the present owner 4 years ago.

I made an offer last Friday on the car explaining why i was offering the amount. I said i would be away on a golf weekend until Sunday night. The Seller just asked that i wait until Sunday night for his answer - I said no problem.

But on Saturday evening (so opnly 24 hours later) , he emails me to say it's mine and he will send me the finance company details so i can pay the outstanding finance off and then the balance to him.

Sunday evening on returning from my weekend away, I email seller for an update. Monday nothing.......Tuesday I email him , then call him, again nothing. He eventually calls me back Tuesday afternoon, to say sorry about the confusion, that a buyer has paid money into his account but it hasn't arrived ! So i asked why he had sold the car to someone else, his answer was that it's not sold as they haven't paid....I somewhat disagree with him and asked that he at least show some respect and phgone me Tuesday evening to say whether or not the car had been sold.

I got a text an hour ago "Car sold, sorry about confusion but i was offered more money so you can understand".

He sold the DB9 Volante to buy either a Ferrari 612, Maserati Grancabrio or a DBS - I won't say what kind of fruit I hope he ends up with !

...and no i don't really mean that. That's just life i guess.

If the car was as stated, it was very cheap. Most people already said that. So that fact you explained to him why you were offering what you were offering suggests you didn't try to just chip him a token couple of hundred.

Yes it's frustrating if people go back on their word, not condoning that.

However, that car was very cheap and if it was the right car for me I wouldn't have lost it by haggling. I know everyone likes a deal, but sometimes the price is right on something if you want it, just pay it. If you squeeze someone, as in this case, they'll sometimes take the better offer.

Someone else got a bargain in my eyes.

I agree with the above.......unless you had paid him a deposit with an agreed timetable for the balance then you have only yourself to blame.....so you lost the car but there will be others

Don't agree with the above at all. There were factors in the advert that led to me offering less than asking price. The advert for the car was misleading (there were no winter wheels, just the tyres and they didn't cost anywhere near £2600 ! , there were no clear rear lenses and the interior photos are of an updated interior and not the actual interior in the car - the actual car seats did not have stitching down the centre, there is also a large scratch on the rear quarter panel - car had been keyed recently and was not mentioned in the ad).
I still thought the car was reasonably priced and we spoke about the price , the seller wanted 48 hours to think about it - I agreed with him he may get more money for the car (he was pushing for a quick sale), but that i wasn't prepared to pay more. I then wrote him an email a few hours later on returning home detailing the reasons i had given to him in person and I also spoke to him again on the phone that same evening. I was happy to wait 48 hours for his answer, he however was happy to take my offer after 24 hours.

...and then he went back on his word ! It was him who agreed to the sale within 24 hours after i was happy to give him 48 hours to decide !

Yes , that's the whole point sorry, he agreed to the deal And confirmed in email ! I thought I had bought the car and was moving funds around accordingly.

I'm not upset that I lost out because of price , I am upset because I lost out after he agreed to the deal !

I just think it shows poor form , I wouldn't do that myself.
