It was only a few miles but my mind is officially blown.

Oh to be the lucky few.

So what was the gearbox axtually like to use?

Oh, and what was the 'chassis' number? laugh

Gearbox... Insanely clunky, but honestly who cares when you're driving a One-77.

I literally only piloted it for about 5 miles so I can't offer much input other than one stupidly large smile on my face.

Oh and for the record there's no doubt about the VIN number of this one!

When I was granted a passenger ride in a One -77 I failed to notice a clunky gearbox! What I did notice was an insanely fast car driven by someone who understood what an Automated manual gearbox is. My Vantage S has the same gearbox albeit with different ratios but basically the same. I never ever drive Pearl in D for drive mode, quite why the factory insist on offering that D option I really do not know. The gearbox is a manual operated by paddles, it is not an auto!

The One-77 is not a car for everyday use , in my opinion it is a brute! Full on explosive power and handling, I simply haver never been in a car so insane ! Aston Martin , I congratulate you for building such a bare knuckle monster.

One of the factory race drivers described D mode to me as useful "when you're on the phone or something" makes sense to me.

Steve, I agree with you . The point I am making is that people who road test AM's fitted with the ASM box seem to drive them solely in D mode. Then the criticism starts. When the paddles are used the car is a manual only one that shifts much faster than a conventional one. As a result changing gear is just as engaging unlike a DSG box.

Molly has had a Polo GTi for six months fitted with a DSG box, after a while we stopped using the paddles because the gearbox was so fast and so clever. For both of us you become detached from the whole driving experience! It ceases to be fun. Anyway her GTI has slurped over a gallon of oil in 6700 miles and has now had a new engine fitted! I have just changed the car for a Polo GT Bluemotion fitted with a manual box, much more fun. wink

This was parked next to the One-77 and in all honesty, even if I had the money for the One-77 I would buy this instead.

Vanquish S Ultimate, the best sounding car AM ever built:

Yes Rob, I had my Vanquish for 2 years before I tried the "D" mode. Now I only use it when on the phone "and" drinking coffee!

Will there be a change of user name?

MollyGTBluemotion

Who comes up with these warm comforting car names?
Volkswagen presumably feel, 'blue is the new green'.
Think Mr. Cameron said that too.

yes I also have an ASM Vantage NEVER driven in D and a DSG car ALWAYS driven in D hehe
Both suit different situations perfectly (for me any way)

Looking at a Golf GTI, and leaning toward DSG. As my only car (and therefore source of driving "pleasure") sounds like you guys are saying go for the manual...? It would save me a grand that would go straight into the "V8VSR 2014" fund... biggrin

DSG is so much better. I recommend you go for it. I've had it in my Polo GTI and now in the S3. Brilliant gearboxes yes

I'm looking at a new A3 (diesel unfortunately as I'm doing too many miles to justify the S3) with DSG at the minute. The latest generation of the boxes is even better from my experience of test driving them.
