Hi all,

I currently own an 1996 Lotus Esprit S4s but having had it for 3 years I am thinking it might be time for a change. An Aston Martin is on my bucket list so I've been keeping an eye on V8 Vantage prices. I must explain this would not be a daily driver but like my Esprit a weekend & nice sunny day car to enjoy but for that reason I don't want to buy one & find it's worth 50% of what I paid for it in 2 or 3 years time, I get enough of that from my daily driver :-(
I know that no-one knows for sure how prices will go but I'd appreciate your thoughts on an early ( 2005/6 ) V8 Vantage. Do you see them going down to less than £ 20k like DB7's did or do you think £28k to £30k is as low as they will go ?
My previous toys have included a Ducati 748, an AC Cobra replica & a 1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera, all of which having kept them for 2 or 3 years I sold for either the price I paid or more which helps me justify to my better half spending this amount of money on something that will do less than 3k miles a year :-)

Any thoughts / comments appreciated.
Regards, Phil.

Depends over which time period you are thinking. More V8Vantages made than DB7's. So in the long term yes they will go below 20k. This winter we will probably see at least one below 25k, but prices picking up next spring.
All IMHO of course

I think prices have hardened a little this year, with some dealers asking more for early V8V now than they were at the end of last year !!

The Vantage is expected to be replaced by a new model, during the ownership period you describe.
New models usually have an adverse effect on car prices.

It is such a great car though, in so many different ways. Try to forgive a little expense.

Prices actually firmed up about 3 years ago. They had dropped to I think their lowest prices seen then and then picked up quite well and settled. The right car with good colour combo and options will always command better money. I don't think you will get depreciation proof like the esprit but the car will be far more useable. Saving for weekends isn't a necessity on more modern toys. Speaking from experience as I also have had Loti, TVRs old and newer Porsches. I bought one of the first V8Vs in 05 and sold after 6 months. Bought a 57 plate last year and used it regularly. Had a few items to attend to when I bought it. But has run like a Swiss watch. And looks and feels like new (bubbly handles aside). Testament is that my 997CS has hardly turned a wheel since I bought the Aston. Decided this week actually to sell it as it's not getting used. No such thoughts on the Aston.

Jon! Where have you been? Nothing for 3 months and now a reappearance. I assumed you had sold and turned to the Dark Side or some similar dismal fate.

There is no likelyhood of me going to the 'Dark Side', Pete.
Once hooked by that special Aston Martin 'thing', I am now Mr. Loyal.

This forum 'hit the rocks' three months ago, so I stopped.
Will see how it goes.

trade price for a Vantage is already below £20k

if you want to wait a few years they will continue to drop as more high mile ropey ones hit the market...then it will be buy on condition not age

As the car is an aluminium construction with dry-sumped engine, double-wishbone suspension, blabla i'm pretty sure that with good history, and below average mileage, a V8V will have pretty much bottomed out now. Around 85% of the 70,000 Astons built over 101 years are still around, and eventually, every Aston will start to go up in value.

Really? Private sales start low 30's and dealership high 30's. I would be astounded if anyone is selling below £20k. If they give me a call and I'll throw in an extra 10% sight unseen.

thats what I was offered ! ...and similar online on the usual Parkers and webuyanycar etc ...no doubt low twenties trade in at at dealer if trading in

what do you reckon a Jan 2006 with 70K miles, full history is worth for a cash sale into the trade then? needs paint to doors handles (bubbling) and usual stone chips otherwise excellent condition...£25k?

I reason, providing its a good colour combo spend 500 quid sorting the paint issues and put it up on here and autotrader at £29,500.

It's not scientific, but there is currently only one Vantage on Autotrader at the moment under £30k and that is £29,999 with a private seller. There are 2 north of 60k miles on at £31 and £32k with dealers.

The mileage might but some off but I would have thought that £27,500 would generate interest (caveat: without knowing condition, options etc). I suspect people would bight your hand off at £25k and you would still beat the dealer quotes.

I'm sure some are offering <£20k trade-in - but you'd be a fool to accept it!

A bit over £30k starts the nice ones under 50k miles, and this was roughly the same this time last year.

I don't think the Vantage is in a bad place. No replacement here to sour demand for this model. No stories of terribly expensive failures (Porsche we are looking in your direction). And the cost of fuel dropping in the past 3 years.

Working against it there's some desirable competition in the R8, GTR and 997 but these don't seem to be doing that badly for values either. None of these are being hosed out on cheap finance in the way that much other premium stuff is, so there won't be a glut of ex-finance cars around in the coming years, and they won't tank in value like some - e.g. C63, E92 M3 or a BMW 6-series. (I just noticed how cheap E60 M5s are - were these done on cheap finance? They seem like a bargain!)

Comparison with the DB7 is surely irrelevant - the target market and buyers would seem to be completely different?

E60 M5's have the SMG gearbox which can go wrong expensively and frequently, it's the main reason they're so cheap. I think the V10 is pretty solid

Cheers, some food for thought. Definitely going to keep an eye on prices as I have an itch to scratch. I need to keep in the good books with my better half as well !

Sorry for going O/T but does anyone know this car;

https://used.astonmartin.com/en-GB/Search/Details~...

"KEY DETAILS
PRICE: £38,991
EXTERIOR COLOUR: ONYX BLACK
INTERIOR COLOUR: UPPER - BLACK CHERRY
LOWER - BLACK CHERRY
REGISTRATION DATE: 01 JANUARY 2007
MODEL YEAR: 2007
MILEAGE: 12,699 MILES"

Seems a bizarrely low mileage but I'm strangely attracted to sitting in a V8 powered Aubergine. Does it look as odd in the metal?

Cheers

I test drove this car with nothing exciting to report. The one thing I would say is that the colour is pretty full on once you are in the cabin with the doors closed. I suspect if you like the colour you are well positioned to drive a deal on price. It's been there for a while.

I like the interior colour and stitching detail. Mileage low indeed but not of course a guarantee of fewer issues than a higher mileage car.

Thanks for the info...very helpful.

I'm not totally sold on the idea of an Aston, I was about to pull the trigger on a new bmw but my head was turned after a quick search for what I could buy used for similar cash. Logic and reason were not present at the time.

Having said that I've got a lot of previous in buying cars with unusual colour and trim combos so I'll take a trip to see how it looks in daylight .
