I guess I should be happy that its the windscreen and not the bonnet but managed to pick up what sounded like half a house brick on the passenger side and left a bullet hole.

Its passenger side so I can get it filled but I dread the thought of a new windscreen. Nearly ever car I've owned has needed one at some point and they never seem the same afterwards. Any thoughts or recommendations on places? I dare say Admiral will want me to use autoglass.

Ouch! That is beyond the scope of a filler repair (larger than a Pound coin).

I too have had this on every car I can remember and I too dread the 'must use Autoglass'. However when I insisted on not using Autoglass one time the insurance company loaded my premium the next year (as well as me having to pay a higher excess - I was not happy) so watch for this.

All that said on my previous A7 which I was selling I went along with Autoglass and I have to say theu were excellent on what is a tricky screen replacement on that car (Head Up Display and several sensors etc) and a two man job to fit. I really could not fault it and they were very helpful when I messed them around on the appointment time and place.

I had a crack develop from a chip and got mine done by Autoglass.

They sent their top fitter from the local depot and there was no problem. They carried it out at my house as I could park it in the garage (in case of rain). Never had an issue with it and it did have the heated windscreen fitted and that works fine as well.

Larger chips can be repaired, but does depend on where the damage is on the screen.

Can you elaborate on the premium being loaded after claiming for a windscreen?

I insisted on using my own specified repairer. At the time they said OK but I would have to pay a higher excess which was laid out in the policy so I was OK with that. At renewal time my premium had gone up a couple of hundred Pounds and when I questioned it they said 'well you did make a claim for a windscreen and it was very expensive'. I said I thought it should have no effect and they said that was true with regard to my NCB but my premium would still be loaded due to my 'claim' and indeed it was shown as a claim under my history with them. Went off to a broker who said it was bks and they would never list a windscreen as a claim so I renewed elsewhere.

Did you look into your policy details, and if the T's & C's (or Policy Facts) stated this? I question the legalities of this TBH.

That is repairable (just) but you must ensure that a proper dry out technique is used to remove all traces of moisture before embarking on the repair as with that size of star there are plenty of places for it to lurk. Admiral use National windscreens who do not have any dry out regime so avoid them. If you want a competent repair avoid going through the insurance route altogether as you will just get roped into a service driven by corner cutting to reach a price point.

It is in the insurance companies interest to get you to claim for an screen because it gives them an opportunity to put up your premium for years to come and claw back some of the cost in the form of a rebate from the supplier later on that you will never be aware of.

If you are ever down London way PM me...

One assumes you have substantial insurance company shares in your pension portfolio as they clearly make sooooooo much money rolleyes
