How do you get a private sale professionally inspected?
Discussion
yes what Neil just said about Rikki. you pay him and he goes and does an inspection on it and travels all over, not just this country.
there are no cast iron things about it but just pick the right person to do it that knows those particular cars you are looking for.
the reports are normally worth it. even if they say nothing more than "here is my invoice for £300, the dealer is right, the car is perfect".
it still could be the best £300 or so you ever spent

Well, i called Rikki Cann earlier today for a price. They told me Rikki would do a full inspection including a test drive and diagnostics for £625. That price includes the VAT.
He then calls you and goes through the report giving his advice etc as you are not there when he does the inspection.
It was a bit more than i was expecting if i am honest even though it is a relatively small percentage of the asking price of the car.
I'm going to have a think about it.

Did you actually take the advice of the previous poster and google "Rikki Cann"???
Yes. I obviously googled him. What is the point of your reply?
is your reply a subliminal jab at the fact he seems very well experienced and established and professional and i should have expected a huge premium?

I am still undecided. Realistically, the £625 is border line unaffordable.
Seriously? You want to buy an Aston but can't afford ~600 quid for a professional inspection? Most of the Indys in the FAQ will do inspections, but you will need to get the car to them. Or get a 140 point inspection done at any AM dealer for ~£250.

Seriously? Did you actually just drop the "you can afford to buy an Aston but not £600" comment? I was waiting for that! And just to clear a few things up. Firstly, I have a budget to work to. This includes budgeting for insurance, tax, travelling costs, imminent maintenance, unexpected maintenance and of course the rest of my bills this month. The £600 for an inspection was not originally budgeted. And it's about £300 more than I estimated it would be. So if I'm honest, I don't like the thought of paying £625 for someone to look at the car when even as you say, main dealer is only £250.Most of the Indys in the FAQ will do inspections, but you will need to get the car to them. Maybe I should have worded my previous comment differently.
Bottom line is I think £625 is too much.

This comes up as the fourth link of my Google search (after the rickicann.com links):

Admittedly, I only followed the links to his website. And this does change my outlook somewhat. I'm surprised no body mentioned this sooner? http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/9085012.No_jail_fo...
I think this topic is in danger of becoming overheated.
Bottom line is this, you can save several thousand pounds buying privately, however if you go to a AM dealer you will get a one year warranty worth circa £1500 and an amount of peace of mind.
For some that is worth paying the extra.
Alternative is to buy privately and pay to have an inspection for peace of mind.
That's it .

the point of the aston 140 check is that it looks only at all those things that are claimable under the ASTON extended warranty. the point of which is to protect the warranty and to protect astons interest in the warranty.
not you.
it doesnt look at squat diddly else that isnt. they dont care. they wont pay.
it doesnt look at other things for other peoples warranty either.
so for an independent buyer it is the the most pointless waste of money in comparison to a private check on the car by an experienced examiner who will look at all the things that have oft been repeated time and time again on here that are NOT covered by the 140.
i doubt that rikki is anymore expensive than most and would allow for a full day including writing up the report so it isnt actually that expensive.
who do you work for and what is their sell hourly rate for someone at the top of their game??? british gas would charge as much for someone three days off the dole.
save your £625 now and spend far more later. Financially astute budgeting me thinks not.

Seller is always free to set out their stall but if it looks poor value then buyer makes the call... Could just be 3 hours work with no comeback?
In fact thought the Aston check was more like £500? Couple of hours work at £200ph?
3d party warranty company's will insist on an enginer check for £70. If it passes its covered...
The less savvy/tech you are the more belts and braces I would suggest!
