Build Project MO55 begins,,,,,
Discussion
Tony, Mike, thanks for the suggestions, I have emailed Pugsley & Lewis. I get the impression from speaking to David Jacks at Derby (Aston Engineering) and Chris Woodgate at Silverstone, both whom look after original DBR1's, that although they understand and sympathise with what I am trying to achieve, they struggle to work up any enthusiasm. Maybe a friend of a friend of an owner that can connect me/us directly and then some kind of trust could be established, that would be a beginning perhaps.
Do you have the precise dimensions of the bonnet latch and any detailed photographs, showing the profiles?
This could help to create an accurate CAD model for an STL production file.
The reason I ask is, I've just helped out a friend and fellow AMOC member, in a very similar position to yourself i.e. no part available to copy directly.

Chris, precise dims I do not have, photographs I have a few but then again, to few to mention,,,sorry. Until I have access to an original latch, to obtain the details you mention, I'm stuffed. Its unfortunate that those latches that exist, all appear to be attached to rare and expensive cars, where permission to take a pattern seems very difficult to find. This could help to create an accurate CAD model for an STL production file.

David, I will try John G after the bank holiday, thanks.

It's a shame that you're not recreating the No. 5 car...
But I am Johnny,,,#7 at Goodwood in 1958, she wore #5 at Le Mans 1959, this is the winning car. But of course I understand why you would wonder I should choose a less recognised victorious number,,,its all to do with the number 7 being Sir Stirlings favourite and me putting the MO55 DBR number plate on my replica DBR1. It is my intention that Sir Stirling will drive my car on completion, perhaps at Goodwood.Edited by Y100 on Sunday 24th May 08:01

Bob - not sure if you watched the Lightweight E-Type replica program on the TV last night, but Lord March's comments may have kiboshed your plans for Sir Stirling to drive your car at Goodwood. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/classics/mark-evan...

Racing is what these cars were born to do and, for those who own them, the doors will be open to prestigious race events all over the world. Unless, it seems, it is the Goodwood Revival. I caught up with Lord March, master of this particular motoring Mecca, to ask if he would allow any of the six new Lightweights to race at the iconic Revival or the even more exclusive Members’ Meeting. His answer was an immediate “no”. He sees these new cars as replicas and replicas simply don’t make the grid at Goodwood.
For the sake of all E-type enthusiasts, I really hope he will change his mind. Once he has seen one, and thrashed it around his garden, I’m sure he will.

I do love a challenge Adam. Lord March might not extend an invitation to the former but he's not going to stop you doing the latter.
PS Bob - yep, the original!

Adam - surely there's a difference between driving at a Goodwood event (ie MM or Revival) and driving on the Goodwood track?

Very fair point and I do hope you are right. I just put 2 and 2 together having seen the show and recalling Bob's comments earlier. Would be great to see Sir Stirling behind the wheel of Bob's DBR1. Lord March might not extend an invitation to the former but he's not going to stop you doing the latter.
Anybody seen Sir Stirling's advert of him driving his Twizzy?

Lord March probably did not use quite the right words, when he spoke about "a replica".
For the Goodwood Revival, I think he wants all the cars to have actually been built in the period (which I think is approximately 1947 to 1966).
So, a Jaguar built by Jaguar, would not be considered a replica that we would usually think of, but of course it is a brand new 2015 car.
