Hello chaps & chapesses,

Heading to Northern Spain at the end of April and hoping for route / road / lodgings recommendations.

Ferry arrives into Santander at 1730 on Saturday and departs at 8pm the following Saturday, so 6 days to fill.

Only "must do" is San Sebastian as wifey is a massive foodie, and thinking of doing that in the middle (Wed / Thurs) so any suggestions either side (Leon? Burgos? Legrono?) would be "mucho appreciado" (as they don't say in Spanish).

Thanks in advance.

Adam

Castro Urdiales is worth a visit, good promenade, good food, between Santander and Bilbao

If you're going from west to east (to San seb), then it's a short hop to the lower Pyrenees - but being April might be tricky with the weather.

Other locations:-

Pamplona
Guernica

As I recall, the coast line is wonderful around there, so coastal drives will be nice (ok it was 25 years ago that I drove there!)

Not sure when bullfighting season is, but you're too early for the fiestas.

Could watch a match a the new Bilbao stadium (I'm sure yourbetter half will love it!)

Burgos 1/2 day.
Salamanca 1/2 day, drive onwards to Porto and then loop north and back east.

Thank you everybody for the great advice and recommendations.

Will, those restaurants look amazing and going to book the Landa, LBS thumbup

As per comment above re pregnant wife (hmmm...lightweight seats!), driving stints will need to be kept relatively short, so going to give Porto and maybe even the Pyrenees a miss, although I may do a day trip on my own out to the mountains when we're based in San Sebastien for a few days.

Provisional itinerary looks like this for now:

Will share pics and final route when I'm back.

Hasta luego!

Adam a quick trip over the border along the coast road to Biarritz is nice, at dusk is superb!

If you venture into the Pyrennes try and find the legendary Col du Tourmalet

If you manage Burgos, have a look in the Cathedral which houses the tomb of El Caballero , better known as El Cid.

Toledo worth a go as well with the steel works making some of the worlds finest steel ( bayonets for US Forces etc ).
