Hi, I'm planning a mini-tour of Wales over a long weekend. Probably starting with a trip through the tunnels on the A55, on to Snowdonia, then into mid Wales for the Evo triangle, followed by the Black Mountains. There'll also be a few sightseeing stops at beaches, castles and defunct slate mines along the way.

I'm looking for some recommendations on places to stay, nice country retreat where the Aston wouldn't look out of place, but they don't charge £15 for a G&T, i.e. I'm a cheapskate.

Ed50 and Eleanor stayed at this one so maybe get an update from him.

It's right by my caravan and on the doorstep of Mount Snowdon smile

Maybe not that helpful but I've stayed at Lake Vyrnwy a few times and personally I think its a bit tired but some people love it - depends on your taste. There are certainly plenty of great roads around there, the Evo triangle not necessarily the best of them.

PS is that your real name?

Cheers Jon, I'll have a look at that one as well, will need to get clearance from the other half anyway, so she'll decide if it's up to scratch.

No that's not my name, I took inspiration from my favorite monobrowed Spanish cyclist, whom I try to emulate when out on the bike.

Well remembered Phil,

It was alright but probably no better and maybe not good value for money.

It was all a bit Fawlty Towers during our stay which the Manager was most apologetic about, he even offered a discount for a return stay which was kind of him……smile

We haven't been back to that area since but probably won't reconsider it even with it being in a great location for the area attractions and of course the roads are right outside the
door to enjoy.

I personally didn't like the drive way down to the property which seems to go on for ever as it was mainly a single track road with the occasional passing place. It was in poor repair with
over hanging bushes ready to do your paint work and it also had a few speed humps (Tank traps)ready to make you worry about your up coming splitter repair bill.

We found ourselves reversing back along it on numerous occasions to allow on coming guests to pass which can be stressful if others are now behind you,all good fun………..biggrin

The car park is gravel but generous in size so there's plenty of parking, the grub isn't too bad although we found the service very hit and miss which was hardly surprising
with the Restaurant Manager thinking he was Basil rein carnet with his over the top antic's and off the cuff remarks……..nuts

Would have been more the funnier if he could have got your order right whilst performing…...clap

Well if you fancy it for a short break I'm sure it will suffice but be prepared to scratch your head at times, they even lost our room key at one stage as none of the keys had a room
number on the fob which caused a laugh when the receptionist was running up and down trying handful's of keys before finally finding ours.

Pure comedy all the way………...thumbup

I think when we go back to the area we'll go to the Groes Inn tbh as I won't fit in one of Jockman's Caravans beds and my ribs can't take any more at the Manor………..hehe

I've just been reminded I've stayed at the Royal Victoria in Llanberis. Another tired hotel and full of OAP coach parties when I stayed. Wouldn't really recommend it.

If you are anywhere near Llandrindod Wells the place to stay is the Metropole. The owner is a PH owning a couple of sporty BMWs and hosted the PH AM welsh weekender last year.

For the first venture out this year round Wales, and encouraged by this thread, we stayed at the Metropole. Every bit as good as the previous threads have suggested. Very welcoming, great hotel, facilities and food. Ample parking space with wide bays. The perfect base for exploring mid Wales and driving some great roads.

Hi BigMig,
I live in the NorthWales area so if you're planning on staying more in the north area then check out the following;

http://www.bodysgallen.com/ - bit pricey but well recommended and we put clients up in here when we want to impress. Very close to Llandudno and Conwy and Snowdonia is about 30mins away

http://www.caerrhunhall.co.uk/ - never stayed here but it's a really nice old place and have been to a couple of weddings there. It's a bit more secluded but there are a couple of decent pubs(including the Groes Inn that others have mentioned) within a 10 minute drive.

Hope you find somewhere decent anyway and enjoy the area.. some great Aston roads to look forward to ;-)
