I just splashed out on some British brogues by Loake - except I looked in the shoe after wearing them and it says Made in India. Same with my British KEF speakers - Made in China. Its b hard to buy British and I think its always worth a few quid more. My Aston was made in Österreich and has a German made engine (and yes, I found out those 2 AFTERWARDS as well). rotateconfused

Nice one Cyder,

Glad to see some are looking to promote our own manufacturing industries rather than encourage outsourcing.

Where ever possible buy British, even if it is a few quid more.

Incidentally, I was quite amused by the popularity of that post with most completely missing the sentiment behind it.

Chip in my phone - ARM, so at least it was designed here and I'm sure it would be made here too if we were allowed to pay people 3p a month...

I await the inevitable.
ARM don't manufacture, they licence the technology, for other companies to use and manufacture.

That's right, because there is more profit in the creative design, than making the electronic chips. I think the manufacturing anyway is done by robotic machines, so with customers demanding the best purchase prices, the machinery of course goes where costs are low.

Incidentally, I only mentioned ARM originally, because of their success in growing to become a top 100 UK quoted company.

Sanders and Sanders run by my mate third generation Henry Sanders make outstanding British mens shoes also Cheaney shoes run by the Church cousins make British mens . If you are into funky shoes jeffery West were qmade by Cheaneys too. Look around and you will find quality UK manufactured products. These companies have overcome problems caused by narrow minded banks and politicians to survive when things are tough. Please support us

Rolls-Royce (the automotive section) has been a German company since, oh, 1998. That's 17 years. Please keep up at the back. wink

I do like to support and buy British Mike - it makes so much sense on so many levels (even my work camera is made by Sony in Bridgend as a close second best - keeps the locals employed)! I'm not sure how I'm getting to grips with shoes that cost more than a 20" Michelin Super Sport though wink

No st Sherlock.

Next you'll be telling me that MINI in Oxford is owned by BMW as well, and all their car bodies and engines come crated from Bavaria .

I think you missed the point somewhat wink

No, I think that you are missing the point. Rolls-Royce is a German company. The cars use German manufactured shells, engines and technology.

They happen to be assembled in the UK. Just like Nissan Micras are. This doesn't make a Micra a 'British' car.

Wozy68,

I suppose most car 'manufacturing' just involves the assembly of parts manufactured by others. As you discovered, marketing people love the description 'Handbuilt'.

Your interest in woodworking will (I was about to say would) be satisfied by a visit to the Morgan factory in Malvern Link. Their three wheeler is mostly assembly, but some of their models need craftsmen.

[Ref. RR] ... I've never seen a woodworking shop like it, in fact you couldn't (from what I could see) make timber parts there, so it seems they don't even make or even finish them either.

I have found a photo.

Plenty of wood to see (Ash) and the Company is also 100% British owned.

Perhaps the very last of the line.

(My earlier comment about the three wheeler was wrong. They do make timber bodies for that model, as you can see in the photograph.)
