Paddy has posted a pic of a Vantage S and it has provoked a discussion on the colour of the wheels.
Several posters have strongly expressed their dislike of black wheels and I wonder if there are any circumstances where black wheels are acceptable.
I have a black DB9V amd have contemplated having them painted black when I have them refurbished.
David Goldie's DB9 ( Speculatore ) has black wheels on his black DB9 and I think they look fine.
So,in general, what and why does this subject so polarise opinion?
Are they "mean and moody" or just a bit too "boy racer" ?

Bit of an extreme example there Pete, and hardly an Aston.
Here are some examples that are more appropriate on which you may wish to comment.........

The Corsa is clearly not an Aston but my suggestion is that you are associating your Aston with such a look if you put black wheels on it.

LD's Vanquish is gorgeous and the wheels aren't black. They are diamond turned with black innards which IMHO is a completely different ball game and looks great. The diamond turning emphasises the design of the wheels rather than almost completely hiding it as black does.

KF's Vantage GT is not quite my cup of tea but I'm sure his wheels are dark graphite rather than black which is OK.

Can't really tell much about the DB9V in a B&W picture.

It's obviously all a matter of personal taste but for me black (particularly matte black) just hides the design of the wheels and looks ste. It's your car though Steven so carry on ……….

I think black works well with black. If it starts to date, then plan B is to get them painted Ferrari Grigio Ferro - my favourite of the darker greys.

As usual Tony, you are absolutely right.
Unfortunately I have not been blessed, like your goodself, with your good looks and muscular physique.
Your DBS and you driving is indeed a " fanny magnet".

Your photograph illustrates my own opinion very well.

We cannot see any details of the wheel at all. A silver wheel will reveal the spendour of the particular shape.

When black cars are spotless under lights in a showroom they look fabulous.
I have told this tale before, but it does emphasise my point.
Looking in the mirror, I could see a sports car catching up. The front was all black and I thought it might be a Jaguar XK. As it overtook, I saw a Vantage. The famous Aston grille shape was not visible at all. What a shame, I would have moved over immediately. -smile

This for me, but as ever each to their own. I did opt for the 'Graphite' centres in my case as I thought a bright silver wheel against a bright silver car would not work and I did not want black. I did however want the grille to contrast....

Yes that is great, black grille on a silver Aston, and the famous grille shape remains visible.

You might have the best reg. on this forum. Has it perhaps been 'in your family' for a long time? It would cost a lot to buy now.

By coincidence, my Titanium Silver V8R is currently in the AM bodyshop to get the front bumper repainted.
I enquired yesterday while the car was in the bodyshop about getting the wheels painted Satin Black having seen this V12V with black wheels.

After discussing it with the bodyshop manager, I have decided to stick with the original Graphite & diamond turned finish

Interesting
My car is Lightning Silver, it came with the same wheels as "pearl" in this photo, I recently change them to a dark smoked chrome as per the photo. I don't think it works as the wheels seem to disappear in the the darkness of the wheel arch. I'll be going back to a much lighter chrome colour

That was exactly the explanation the bodyshop manager said to me and it put me off

Many thanks, don't want to get into a reg. debate on this thread but to answer your question, and long story short, yes we have had this plate as long as I can remember going back to when my father ran a private hire firm and all of his cars had them. It was supposed to hide their age (he told my mum) but all the cars were brand new anyway. Some funnny tales of how he acquired some of them. When he folded the business he gave most of them away to friends and extended family but we kept two of the more interesting ones, this being one of them. It has been on a lot of cars over the years.

Or you could put some white letter tires on it and it will make them stand out again. biggrin

You've done a great job Karl- Franz, the car looks swell.
I must admit that I was not sure,at first, about the yellow tyre lettering, having wondered if it might be a step too far.
However it's grown on me and I think you have achieved a "stand out" design that still remains true to the Aston "image".
You seem to be a multi talented chap and I wonder if your day job is in the ceative field.

Posted these on another thread...

My car is black and so I went for something a little lighter - Pearlescent graphite grey.
IMHO they suit the car perfectly.
