I'm quite keen to buy a 2007 DB9 but I'm put off by the factory tinted windows.

Has anyone replaced their windows, and what costs are involved - to give me a ballpark figure.

I've seen some new window prices on AMBits... £170 each for main door, £460 for rear, so it doesn't look an expensive changeover.

Anything I should know further?

You learn something everyday. I didn't think they were tinted - at least not in a major way.

Me too - never seen tinted windows on the options list ? Are you sure they are not aftermarket tint film which could be taken off?

The owner seemed to be sure they were factory tints in his ad, but I'll check with him further.

Owner seemed to think they are a 25% tint, as a visual estimate. Faces can still be clearly seen behind the window. I can live with that.

I'm relying on his description because I haven't seen the car yet - it's several hundred miles away and I want to make sure most of the ducks are in a row before I visit.

UPDATE: Got the car today and while I was taking off some kind of tape from inside the quarterlight, I accidentally found that I had made a pinhole in... the tint!

So now that I knew it was add-on, I went to Google and discovered how to take it off. Some 2 hours later I got it completely off all 4 side windows leaving only the back to do later. That will take a bit of work because of the lack of space back there and I'm a bit claustrophobic.

As to the method - luckily I have a high temp commercial steamer. I steamed the inside of the windows around the area I wanted to pull off, started it with my fingernail and slowly it came away leaving only a small amount of glue which I took off using a new razor blade and window cleaner spray.

No more gangsta!

Here's the view halfway through the pax door. Each large window took about 10-15 min to pull off.

Thanks. I based it on the One-77 factory but I didn't replace my red cabinets for white ones like them.

It's amazing how good a car looks in an all white environment too.

Floor is white gloss polyaspartic which is 4x more resistant to impact, no hot tire lift-off, cleans easily and is UV resistant - no yellowing. Plus it's like walking into a sci-fi film set each day!

I think you can spec pimped up factory rears (only) on a Rapide but have never seen one - thankfully.

To pass on what I've found out further, the windows are an AM factory tint, but very minor. My son, a past A-Grade tech and simply the most knowledgeable mechanic I've ever come across, pointed out and explained the markings on the existing windows to me.

They are known as AS values: my front window is AS1, and all the side and rear windows are AS2. That means they are slightly tinted by default.

According to a windscreen website, the AS number stands for American Standard, followed by a number indicating the position in which the glass may be used, based on its optical quality. AS1 is the clearest glass (at least 70% light transmission), is laminated, and can be used anywhere in a motor vehicle (typically just the windshield), AS2 is tempered with at least 70% light transmissions, and can be used anywhere except the windshield, and AS3 can be used in certain locations in certain vehicles (and can be laminated or tempered, and has less than 70% light transmission).

The tint I removed had a 35% value stamped into it, so combined with the factory tint it was likely the installation was illegal. Whatever the value, I simply don't like tints so it's gone, and I've learned a little more about my car. The rear window looks like the others which means it probably doesn't have after-market tint installed, but some time I'll get a shop to test it with a tint meter to substantiate it.
