To all contributors; to have your voices heard and have impact, write an email of complaint to the Independent Press Standards Organisation ("IPSO") at inquiries@ipso.co.uk. If IPSO get enough complaints, then the Herald's editor and the board will have to take action. We should not accept that the Herald's columnist condones and encourages criminal damage on any car, let alone our beloved Aston Martins. This is irresponsible and potentially illegal. The Herald should print a retraction, withdraw the article from their website, take disciplinary action against the columnist and ensure the columnist issues a written apology.

I'm actually going to send an email tonight. I'm not on Twitter but having read her page she clearly still thinks she is correct in what she says. Absolute madness that she has got away with this and the article still exists.

I'm actually so angry. Regardless of what car this is, I assume the owner has worked hard and has put the camera there for a reason, thats paid off, Police have manged to find the criminal - great but then you get a complete fool like this I dont even know where to start - madness!

it is probably nothing more than a cheap and unscrupulous method to get more page hits for the paper so complaining to the regulator is the best option.

Thank you PhilipO. Complaint submitted.

Had not read the article before. I like a journalist to report facts, so won't be reading anything she writes again. What a cheek, and I even own a car built in Scotland.

Complaint emailed and my annoyance expressed to the CEO and Editor on Twitter.
Perhaps this link should be on the GG thread too?

Seems like the owner has been more charitable in requesting that the convicted party not be jailed, than the journalist who wrote the article ever thought possible..one in the eye for journalistic stereotyping

Done - and I dont even own an Aston Martin :-

"Dear Sirs,

I wish to complain about Catriona Stewart's Article in the Daily Herald in which she states that she “Heartily Approves” of Gary Brissett's actions - namely keying the entire side of a parked car.

It is not acceptable that the Herald's columnist condones and encourages criminal damage of any sort.

Catriona Stewart is clearly ignorant as to why this sort of behaviour is a criminal offence and why a prison sentence is indeed applicable to anyone who carries out this sort of moronic crime – regardless of their wealth, income, marital and family status, and indeed regardless to what vehicle the damage is caused.

Using the fact that it is an Aston Martin, in her opinion an expensive car *, as a reason to launch into a misinformed rant based on her own ignorant stereotypes about drivers of high performance vehicles only serves to reinforce my opinion that she is as jealous as Gary Brissett is of high performance cars. By her own admission (when she wrote in the national press “I particularly feel like keying high-performance cars.” ) she is considering carrying out the act of mindless vandalism of high performance cars herself – in court this would be seen as “Mens Rea”.

I hope very much that her own vehicle, or if she does not own a vehicle herself then any of her property, is never key scratched or vandalised. If indeed it did happen then maybe she will then be able to empathise the misery caused to the community and individuals alike by mindless vandalism/criminal damage and realise that her ignorance has led her to make a huge error of judgement in condoning the criminal actions of Gary Brissett.

I trust that you will follow up my complaint with Catriona Stewart and the Daily Herald.

Yours Sincerely

  • you can easily spend as much on a car manufactured by BMW AUDI Mercedes Jaguar etc. .

I got a reply too:

"Thank you for contacting the Independent Press Standards Organisation. Your complaint is currently being assessed, and we will be in touch with you again shortly. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.Should IPSO decide that your complaint falls outside of our remit, or does not raise a possible breach of the Code, we will write to you to explain why and send a copy of your complaint and our letter to the publication. Alternatively, if we decide that the concerns you have raised fall within our remit and raise a possible breach of the Code, and you have not previously exhausted the publication’s internal complaints procedures, a copy of your complaint and any other correspondence you have sent to us, including contact information, will be sent to the publication to provide it with the opportunity to resolve the matter directly with you."

So it works! If we all write to IPSO, we might get some real retribution....

Done too "I trust you will follow up with the editor and that she will be sanctioned and be made to realise that the vandal Garry Brisset is NOT a role model to be eulogised and his actions promoted". KF

Had my reply. Not sure it was from a human though.

In her dream world, she suggested the flashiness of a car, is proportional with the owner's morals.
I take that as a compliment, but the i----t probably meant inversely proportional, if she knows what that means.

Where can I place my order for the car she named? A V8 Vanquish for £90,000.
An attractive price for a Vanquish. Does it have the new twin turbo V8?

Well well, as predicted gary has previously served a long jail sentence. Gary is classed as unemployed within days of arrest. Gary is a sole caregiver as his partner is still depressed. You could pretty much write the script for it.

Well it seems my complaint has been bounced back to me. They want me to justify teh complaint by telling them which point of the code of conduct I consider the journalist broke. Anyone?

"I write further to our earlier email.

IPSO considers complaints framed under the terms of the Editors' Code of Practice.

For the avoidance of any doubt, we do therefore need you to specify the Clause(s) of the Code under which you are seeking to complain. Please use the following link to find the Editors' Code of Practice: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/cop.html

We look forward to receiving this information, and would be grateful for your response within the next seven days.

With best wishes"

IPSO always do this - I replied that the Code does not specify the condonation of criminal damage, so as it is not specified I leave it to them.

I got this too. Intro to the code includes this: "All members of the press have a duty to maintain the highest professional standards. The Code, which includes this preamble...". I don't think condoning the keying of any kind of car can be considered acting in a professional manner so I will refer to the preamble, and this sentence in particular, in my response. The code also says "It is essential that an agreed code be honoured not only to the letter but in the full spirit" and so I will add that the fact that there is no specific clause covering her actions should not prevent them from investigating.

Also had the 'bouncer'.

We perhaps need our fellow PHer, the Vantage owning solicitor.

What has been published might possibly be considered, incitement to cause criminal damage to motor vehicles.

I wonder if IPSO leave criminal matters to others?
