Have you also posted your question on the Ferrari forum, for balance?

I wonder if they are familiar with a V12 Vantage?
Hopefully they have heard of Aston Martin. smile

Our opinions are largely irrelevant.
We all love Astons, no doubt. You've got one of the great ones too. But this kind of car is an emotional choice, not a game of Top-trumps.
You say you've always had a 458 itch and you're feeling like scratching it? Then why not?
If it doesn't work out, what's the worst that could happen?
You lose a few quid, sell it and get another Aston, or Maclaren or whatever soothes your soul at that time.
No pockets in shrouds my friend.

There again, I've got mine just the way I like it. I don't know if I could arsed to go through all that again to get me back where I was.

This is actually quite an interesting question as I always thought I'd get a 458 myself at some point...

458 POSITIVES
  • Proper supercar
  • Better performance
  • It's a Ferrari!
  • Great reviews

V12 VANTAGE POSITIVES
  • Classier
  • Proper boot
  • Manual
  • It's an Aston!
  • No negative reaction
  • The V12 and it's noise
  • More hand built feeling interior
  • Steady price / appreciation
To summarise: 458 better when giving it the beans (performance, noise, handling). V12V better at all other times.

I had an F355 which sounded fantastic above 5K. But ended up dumping it very quickly because I hated that it sounded like a cheap 4-banger when idling or loping through town...

I have owned a few Ferraris and since i was a baby they where my dream car so if you asked me 10years ago i would always say Ferrari. But since i noticed the V12 back in 2010 i wanted one. It has been my first Aston and i do not know weather its because i,m more calm now (older) but i would not change it for any Ferrari i just love it, its superb, in fact i,m just going to keep it full stop!
If you have never owned a Ferrari however then you must.

Looking like Top Trumps for the Vantage then! smile in all fairness the itch I have is only based on the look of the 458.. would need to test drive poss hire one for a long wend.. I have the same passion as everyone for the Aston brand.. owning only British manual cars so definitely a new experience and wouldn't sell without a lot of thought and sleepless nights!! plus is it the time to sell such a rare car at the moment...!! Sure like everyone will be interesting to see what effect the new manual S has on values.. Also being turned down by Ed at gate security for Burgley would be banghead

Haven't owned but driven several 458's. The double clutch just isn't to my taste, it's far too civilised, that's why I much preferred my Scud'. The current crop of modern F cars have lost the raw edge that I found exciting, too cosseted, too BMW for me, you need to take one for n extended test drive and evaluate.
IMO the V12V is a much better all rounder and doesn't attract the wrong kind of attention like my Ferraris always did.

Phil, love the wheels on your car, what make, model, size are they please

It would be interesting for sure.

Bearing in mind that nobody on this forum has been negative towards Ferrari at all, just posted pros and cons of both.

You should post a comment on the Ferrari forum and see what they say, however I wouldn't mention that you've posted on the Aston one, just see what happens.

I hope they would be equally complimentary and balanced............but i'm not sure.

Phil,

Get a good quality scratcher sit down with a beer and give that itch a very long scratch until it's gone! If you jump into the 458 I think you'll very soon regret it. I can only comment on Ferrari ownership (F430 not 458) and whilst I agree the 458 is one of the very best sports cars there is, Ferrari ownership is a completely different experience to Aston ownership. I can understand why you would want to own one.

I owned a F430 for 12 months it was used rarely and every time I took it out you were either swarmed over by enthusiasts or, as previous responders have said, a lot of not very polite waving/gestures from others. I would say it was a 50/50 reaction. It was red of course and you just can't hide away in a Ferrari...the vast majority of the public will look at you and decide immediately that you are either a flash tcensoredt or love you. You do attract a LOT more attention in a Ferrari over an Aston (in my experience anyway) and after a while it jars.

If you don't care about all the attention go and scratch that itch and buy the 458, I'm sure you'll be happy...for a while!

All the above is only my opinion of course...other opinions are valid also. wink I have notched up a fair bit of experience in owning/driving many brands of car and I can say, without any doubt, the best reaction from folk is when you drive an Aston Martin...which is why, very soon, I'll be back into the brand smile

There again many owners don't give two monkeys about what others think...I'd give them 12 months with a Ferrari!

As you know its a very good point that Frankie makes, the general public do seem to just love a Aston Martin and its not just in the UK!

I had a 459 Spyder which I changed for a V12 Vantage roadster.

They are very different cars, but both very special.

The answer depends on what you want a car for. If you really enjoy going very fast (and I mean very very fast!), and feeling at one with a car the Ferrari is the one. It is simply an amazingly alive, stunningly quick bit of kit. It's also very special to use and makes you feel a bit of a superstar. Unlike others on here, I only ever got positive reactions, and l mean very positive - people taking photographs, kids asking to sit in it, people asking me to rev it. You need to be a bit of an extrovert. Oh, and prepare to worry about every mile you put on it. I put 6000 on mine in 18 months and the dealer questioned my sanity.

The V12 is just that bit more laid back. Beautiful but not as in your face. Noisy bit not really noisy and a much more mellow sound. Fast, but not mental. Great handling but not as racing car as the Ferrari. I guess still special but without making a statement every time you use it.

The Fezza would be great on a track if only it could get through the noise testing...

To sum up, the Ferrari was absolutely untouchable when I blasted it around the Brecons. The Aston is probably better everywhere else

On the whole, I love my Aston, probably more than the Fezza, but I'm glad I owned a 458.

I appreciate it's a few years ago but this was always the issue with my F355, worried about putting miles on it. My understanding is nothing has changed. Whilst I don't do masses in the DBS I never ever worry about using it. That said it's a keeper, I never felt the same about the 355.

Bob. You know deep down what you should be doing with your V12VR, get it sorted yes

When I drove the 458 (btw, it was for a 30 min city drive/no traffic) I had a strange feeling:

It looks Ferrari, no objection here BUT somehow, I felt "not being in a Ferrari". What does this mean?

- does it "scare" you? No, not at all. It gives you too much confidence since you start moving the car. Even in race, it is very "compliant"
- does it sound good? Yes, but it felt too digital to me. A great melody, no doubt..but maybe too much?

Without getting in more details, and for the sake of providing an example, when I drove an F430, it felt more "Ferrari", more edgy/scary and sounded more "real". It feels you had to respect the car more.

Obviously, my point is: if you are interested in dynamics, that is probably the car to have, but if you want an "event"-type of car, you may get bored after a while, more easily than you would think (that is what I thought after the test-drive)

Btw, either choice you are going to make, it will be a good one, no doubt

Yeah I'd forgot about mileage, F cars are far too mileage sensitive. I remember driving back from Monaco wondering how many £k I'd just lost on the car...

IMO, The V12V epitomises everything good about a sports car, driving, and feel good factor, coupled with public admiration. Ferraris are generally not practical, usable cars and the public think you're just a cock!
Cheers Phil - I'll remind you of that at the next Cars & Coffee Meet!!

Swap a V12V for a 458 ! I had the same thought about a couple of years ago...
This is the car you want:

I never looked to a 458 ever again !

Quite a few fellow AM V12V owners have followed the same route recently.

Both very fast cars but the 458 will make you drive faster more of the time to get your fix.
I just sold the 991 GT3 because of this.
I always used my F cars and put the miles on. Its about £1 per mile depreciation over the cars that sit in garages. I put 20,000 on my 430 in 18 months.

What I find interesting about the V12S is that I can see myself keeping the car for longer than anything I've previously owned. It has the perfect blend of old and new unlike 458's and 12C's that are firmly next generation technology which I don't enjoy as much.

Absolutely agree...
