Got around to watching the tape today. Perhaps I was not expecting much, but I didn't think it was too bad. Chris Evans wasn't as obnoxious as I expected, and at least I won't have to be told what's cool by the least cool guy on the planet.

Just watched it and I confess I was left a little confused (and yes a little bored)

Is it going to be just Chris Evans (trying too hard) and Matt Le blanc (I liked him) in the studio each week? Surely Chris Harris isn't just going to be on the BBC 3 programme?

The old Top Gear worked because of the chemistry between Clarkson, May and Hammond. I know Clarkson is a bit of a prat but it made me laugh and had some nice cars and photography to boot. I can't see Chris Evans replicating that based on the limited evidence of the first episode. At best this will become a rival for the slightly dull 5th Gear with the odd moment of interest (the Vulcan) and the rest forgettable. I hope I'm wrong and the series improves from here

It was like Timothy Dalton playing Bond, forgettable.

It hasn't filtered down to the bottom of the world yet, but I've seen a few select clips and in one I laffed out loud... they were using the exact same phrases for the Stig intro as the original program and it was weird. Are those phrases copyright to the Beeb too?

The part I enjoyed about the old Top Gear was the passion they (mostly) expressed for everything Aston Martin. That really came through - they were almost brand ambassadors.

This one seems to be just a car show, and with two American muscle cars too that are not GT40s. I want European models, otherwise I could have watched the USA TG.

I watched the first 20 minutes, have on dvr but haven't finished. I like Sabine Schmitz, she's very funny and would be a great regular, but don't know if she is. The drive/race or whatever that was with 3 wheel cars made no sense and was unwatchable. Matt Leblanc is very wooden and blah. Chris Evans is trying too hard, never shuts up, boring, no chemistry. Maybe the 2nd half I haven't watched yet will be better.

I think lots of people are forgetting how ste Top Gear was with the other 3 idiots.

I must admit to being surprised that it was basically the same show with new presenters but then again when Blue Peter change their presenters its still Blue Peter.

Yes they made some horrendous mistakes by trying to do what the last lot did but Im sure within a few episodes that will be over.

Matt was great and I look forward to seeing more of him and although I agree that Chris Evans was a bit odd Ive always liked him in other things he's done and we have to accept that although he uses weird words (Counter steering !!! LOL) he is a genuine Petrol head with more Money and time spent on cars than the last 3 combined.

Shame Monkeys over on the sister ship though frown Maybe he will appear on the main show whenever the Stig needs some driving lessons. (Ive never been a fan of his ability)

The old show was getting very stale and desperately searching for new things to do, although following the same format this is much better, I think in coming weeks the viewing figures will go up to new levels, Bit like radio 2 after Terry wogan.

Watch this and tell me this first episode was any better?

Think we need to give them time. CE needs to relax, he said as much on the radio 2 slot. Needs Harris in there pronto.

I also think harris should be leading and I'm not a fan of the other guy, he's too forced and artificial

It was pretty hard watching parts of it. I thought Matt was great though, seems a nice guy and relaxed. Evans seems as annoying and loud as me after 10 pints.

I watched Extra gear too, I thought Monkey get pied off a few times which annoyed me. The other host even trying to defend that electric monstrosity was odd; he seemed to be playing devils advocate a little too much.

Pretty much my thoughts too.
After each new weekly instalment with the 3 old presenters car forums across the globe were lit up with the same comments, boring, tired format, nothing to do with cars, scripted, Hammond over acting, the list goes on...
Can anyone remember the truly awful Jason Dawe and how bad James May was when he first appeared, think racing a homing pigeon....

You are correct, I ended up forwarding through most of it and the episode still seemed to last an eternity. I will continue to watch for awhile, maybe it will get better.
