I will be in tadcaster next weekend to do the charity detail that was won at the Burghley event in July. Now, I've not been up that way for years. Should I get myself a flat cap or a whippet so I blend in? Maybe a kestrel too? I just don't want to stand out too much.....

Point of order - Tadcaster is not "up north", it's the faux north which starts at Watford and ends at Middlesbrough. The faux north is considered to be "the north" only by southern softies and Westminster bubble dwellers.

Beyond Middlesbrough is the real north where the whippets and flat cap comments would be appropriate and I would also have advised not to bring a coat as the temperature has barely dropped below freezing here so nobody wears them yet.

As far as I know tadcaster has never appeared in the Viz nor been sent up by said Encylopedia of the True North, so its claim to actually being in the north is tenuous at best.

I think you'll be fine, but when in tadcaster, being in Yorkshire, don't be too showy with your brass as it might upset the locals. smile

It's still 2 and a half hours up north from me, so it's definitely the north. I'm expecting to see a big wall like in game of thrones. I have heard that the Yorkshire types have the same rare breed moths in their wallets as the Scottish.

Paddy, to be safe, I'd bring a box of ferrets, a whippet, a back up whippet, and two tubes of Ecky Thump. Or whatever it comes in.

I thought about loading up the van with chips and gravy, but I'd only get it broken into. "No pies left in this vehicle overnight"
I think if I wear a flat cap and don't take my wallet out, then I think I'll blend in.

Well if you ever want to leave just don't tell the rest of those southern softies how good it is up here. Or else they'll all bloody well want to visit. Bringing their high house prices and their artisan couscous.

No fear of that. They don't venture past Birmingham. Cocktail bars get thin on the ground any further than that.

Knowing your love of cake you might be as confused as I was when trying to order a bacon roll from someone who simply couldn't understand what I was saying, then the penny dropped and she said "oh, you mean a bacon cake!".

Yep, a cake was a roll up there (though this was 20 years ago)!

Ah, but isn't a bacon roll also called a bacon cob around your parts?
