Just to develop this a bit further, has anybody used a plate offset to the nearside of the car, or had any issues with one mounted there?

I've been through the SI which covers plates and I can't see anything which states the plate needs to be in the middle of the car. Vertical position is covered as is character spacing and font etc and all manner of strange requirements for flags, bolts, etc but nothing that I can see about it being in the middle of the car? I might have missed it, our legalese isn't exactly easy to read or follow.

cheers,

Not really a development of my question as to whether anyone would like to part with a V12VS plinth, but to answer your question: given that most Alfa Romeos use an off-centre number plate from the factory, I cant see there being any issues (aside from it, to my eye at least, looking a bit tacky!).

Good point, I hadn't thought about Alfa's.

I kind of agree about the tackiness, I'm just not a fan of the plate overlapping the bodywork lines which it does in the middle of the grille. I'll try a sticky plate offset and see how it looks.

In which case I think your only option, as LBS has suggested, is to affix the plate directly to the body work.

The grey with orange looks amazing Adam! Don't suppose the dealer gave you the removed plinth did they?!

Car looks fab !

That's how I affix my plate, although I use a plate which is narrower from top to bottom, still using road legal font size. Although the percentage difference in total height of the plate compared to standard is not huge, it makes a big difference to the amount of plate which covers the lower grille

Re offset Alfa plates. Here’s one I prepared earlier. Aston plate is three quarter size and stuck to the bodywork. Been on for three years. Don’t need the plinth!

Am doing this tomorrow morning to my car, quick question, sticking the plate direct to the bumper, will this not damage the paintwork when one comes to remove the plates in the future..?

Have done it on three cars now, all without issue. Go for it.

Just use the standard double sided sticky pads for number plates and you'll be fine. I used four on my front plate and it's held perfectly for three years so far.

Best way to remove them if you have to is with a bit of fishing line, then some solvent to take any residual glue off. I've used them for years on several cars and have never had any paint damage issues.

Cracking looking car, great spec you put together there. The plate looks good aligned with the top edge. The unobstructed grille looks fantastic. Did you consider getting the fangs done in orange? I thought about getting them done in red on mine but it would have been too much. Yours on the other hand would look spot on I reckon.

That looks like the perfect solution! Thanks.

I had my bumper plinth holes filled and painted and then ran the plate on a bracket from the towing eye...

Thanks Adam - have replied. I'd definitely consider an orange wrap for the fangs too - can always remove it again!

Does anyone have a Number plate plinth? I know lots of people remove them. I am looking to replace the one on my car which is cracked. they seem expensive for a piece of moulded plastic. Presumably there are quite a few lying around in garages.
