I doubt it. The 911 is a wonderfully simple design which is why Porsche is able to refine it so often and still keep it fresh. Do you not feel the 2-seater Caymen is more of a competitor than the venerable 911?

Yup, agreed, but I've seen the porkerss now and think the early 80s look the best . . . 70s are the most pure though. all imo

I agree but this looks the best . . . I have to see one in the metal to make that a 100% solid statement . . .

A sad thing buying an expensive car in order to get the neighnours respect - eh?
Alas not - he works for them.

Lucky bugger.

Brize Norton ?[/quote]Design team, no idea where he's based. Gaydon I'd imagine? His car has got an AM car park badge on it.

LA - he borrowed it for the weekend.....didn't get a ride in it, although got a run out in the DB9 Volante he had a month or so ago....

No worries about that, I've seen both in the metal at Goodwood and the only similarity is that they are both 2 door GT coupes. The Jag looks fine but the Aston is stunning Looking forward to the launch do on the 14th Rich...

AM dont have a base in Brize Norton but I know the chap you are talking about, he works for them.

If this chap is design, he would mainly work from Gaydon.

<<note to self, stop spending so much time around Aston Martins>>

guys why on earth are you even considering the new jag in the same light as the AMV8 i'll never know!!!

it looks like a fat Ford Puma and as cheaply built as one too.

jag had a winning formula with the XK8/R (although aston did steal the DB7 from them in the first place)but the new jag doesnt live up to its older brother in my eyes, and to then be comparing it to the amazing AMV8 is utter madness

To those that "get" Aston's, we'll always be able to tell them apart.

The Aston "look" is nothing new, check out the DB4, DB5 and DB6 to see what I mean (and yes, some were available at the same time).

I think thats one of its strong points. In the short term atleast.

Long term it all depends if it detracts from AM's excusivity in the same way the lesser Porsches do from the top 911's.

The DB9 and Vanquish are great cars. But rightly or wrongly the reliability scare stories have not improved AM's reputation wrt to producing daily drivers. Something the 2 main competitors in the 80-100k price bracket are renowned for (911TT/SL55).

Exactly - any car at that level *must* be bullet proof reliable to sell in significant numbers, otherwise it is just a Sunday afternoon toy.

Most Porsches are reliable and they are noted for it. Even Toyota, much further down the automotive ladder, are reliable and are noted for it.

I'd be *really* hacked off if I spent that kind of money on a car, and it couldn't even manage reliable.

Hand built and English tends to indicate it will break down a lot, surely, independent of the waffle emanating from the marketing department.

You're wrong to assume that because a car is expensive, it will be more reliable.

As a general rule of thumb, the level of reliability is inversley proportional to the cost. Expensive cars are exclusive and special. This means that they have not had thousands of development mules driving millions of miles sorting things out. Run-of-the-mill Toyotas and Fords have done, and are more reliable.

Porsches are reliable- for a performance car. But not compared to a Ford or Toyota, and they still need a lot of expensive servicing regularly to maintain this level of reliability. If one service schedule is missed, the car will rapdily deteriorate.

TVR, Ferrari, Aston, the faster Jaguars/BMW's/ Mercedes are all comparatively unreliable, unless they have lots of regular, expensive servicing to keep ibn tip-top condition. It is something you will need to accept if you ever pay a lot of money for an exclusive car.

And as for saying "hand built and English tends to mean it will break down a lot..." Care to elaborate? Toyotas are made in England, you know. As are Honda, Nissan, BMW (all 4 cylinder engine production), MINI, Peugeot. The list does go on, but I wont.

Sorry what's all this on here that the DB9 is unreliable and breaks down. OK there might be the odd case that gets highlighted, but I think you'll find that's utter popycock. My DB9 has never put a foot wrong over 14,000 (some driven VERY hard) miles. IMO the engine is just fantastic and it does feel bullit proof to me.

Aston Martin said:

The V8 Vantage has endured the most extensive test and development programme in the Company’s 91 year history during which 78 Prototypes were vigorously tested more than 11 million miles. In Dubai over 12,000 miles of testing was carried out where ambient temperatures regularly hit 48 Celsius and the bodywork of the cars reached 87 Celsius.

High speed testing was conducted at the Nardo test track in Italy and extensive testing was carried out at Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in Germany, and cold weather testing in temperatures as low as -30 Celsius was undertaken in Sweden.

I suggest you invest in a copy of last months Topgear and watch the free DVD. The development and testing that has gone into the AMV8 has been MORE than extensive.
