If your after a fun car to drive, insure and track then get a rev 3+ uk na, strip as much weight out as you can and it will be plenty fast enough

...and then strap a v6 in the back with your na running gear and have something tremendous to play with on track/road.

I'm just getting into MR2s, they are amazing machines. One thing I've always wondered is how does that t-bar roof work ? Where do the erm..."roof bits" go ? Looks like you just remove them completely like a hard top ?

I've tried looking for youtube videos and everything!

You get bags to put them in, removing is easy, putting them in the bags on your own is a pain.

I wouldn't necessarily expect disaster from running a turbo on track, it's just that the chances of a disaster are far lower with an N/A car as there's less to go wrong, it tends to be obvious when something goes wrong, and there are fewer things to cause absolute devastation to the engine if they do fail..

Thats right - with you there - those turbos are full of black magic and boost trickery. Not reliable at all!

I know of quite a few turbo engines which have suffered from ringland failure. Have yet to hear of it happening to an n/a.

In fairness you're right. whilst I think the turbo's are pretty robust at standard or slightly increased boost the NA is less likely to cough.

Back in 2007 I sold my black UK Rev5, and then regretted it.

So, like quite a number of ex MR2 owners I've come back to the fold. I needed a cheap reliable car so I put a deposit down on a UK Rev2 in turqoise with cloth seats! biggrin

Ok, so it's not the best option out there (sunroof, colour, interior) but it is cheap and will enable me to hand my expensive BMW back to the finance company. Plus it's only done 77k and has FSH up to 71k miles.

I'm actually quite looking forward to collecting it! biggrin

If it's any help my turbo started to fail of natural causes after several consecutive laps on Nordschleife during Toursistfahrten (the car was an uncharacteristically impulsive ebay treat for my 30th last year). It continued to work fine on the 10 hour drive back to Northern England, but 20 year old oil seals and 5-7k consistently for more than 40 mins do not make happy bed fellows.

Sourced a newer CT20b (mine is a rev2 and so had the older, faster spooling but lower peaking CT26) and had a specialist fit it. All in all wasn't too bad - probably £500 by the time I was done, all in. Another chap on the owner's club forum snapped up my leaky CT26 and refurbished it, I believe - perfectly doable, but I wanted the piece of mind of having something reliable (and the draw of the slight raise in power appealed also).

In short, don't let the fear of turbo failure put you off a MR2 Turbo. Mechanically the engines are pretty sturdy. It's the usual MR2 foibles such as rotten skirts and (personal taste) chavtastic body kits that you need to watch out for...

Every time I think of getting rid of mine this thread just hauls me back...


In fairness I'm thinking about getting rid of the current one (fairly standard rev 3 turbo tin top that I've spent FAR too much on) and replacing it with an NA t-bar just to say I've tried it..

Just picked up my 4th one. I blame this thread! hehe

Rev2 N/A, Lady owned for 7 years, Full service history etc.

I always end up looking for a Turbo but ending up with an N/A. Just not a fan of the turbo noise or power delivery, I love screaming the engine and having to work every gear. I do get why people like the tubby's though, nothing comes close for the money IMO.

Anyway if I want to go fast on the track I just use the Elise biggrin

Go away with your flush headlights...

Mine are awful, one is sticking up, the other is recessed. I've had to resort to messing with the bonnet spacers to get them as close to flush as possible. Tried to adjust them but the screws are rusted in place.

On a serious note nice looking MR2. Hope you enjoy it.

There are litte adjusters to tweak the height in the headlight assembly. If they are rusted, use some penetrating oil and leave it on for a while.

I was actually messing around with the bonnet spacers as I took that photo :hehe.: Needs a bit more adjustment on my drivers side. Completely forgot about adjusting the light itself rather than the bonnet!

I just bought one for £541, a 1991 rev1 import tintop, it was giggle when i picked it up, too exciting to drive, steering are direct. much much better than mx5. It was very tatty but im doing my best to restore it, to use as daily driver/track car. it has test and tax until may / april.

It was left negelated by previous owner for a year in car park.

Do those engine rev to 8,000 or something like that?




I hated the wheels, they are 205/55/16 all around but the rear rim seem wider in back. I think those are made by WEDS? they are spilt rim type.
And it has the decat pipe and stainless backbox, with mushroom air filter. very loud!
Im going to find set of standard 15" wheels, or even 14", and free flow backbox or cut the rear pipes to smaller size.

There is couple of issues with it.

few stratches, dent on driver side rear quarter,
The rear sills is bent, where it meet the rear tyre, Look like i could bend it back, wrong jacking by kiwkfit types, I bet. no rust on those, just very bent.
the battery starter wire has broken as for now.
Dashboard cluster lights is not working, I have ordered new blubs
wrong brake discs! the front was using rear brake discs, Which i fixed it by using correct 258mm disc. it has new pad fitted already, they were fresh all around, was able to reuse the pads, one of cailper sliding pin was siezed up, cleaned and greased it.
interior trim is loose/broken, door switches was loose.
I was told alternator is noisey by previous owner, but i think its running fine, the noise was caused by engine lid's rod banging on engine? the clip is broken. It's hard to tell because I'm deaf.

I am going to enjoy the car, it is fun car to drive, had me and my wife giggling.
