I have got my hands on my third MR2 MK1 as of now. The first one is in total overhaul mode because of extreme amounts of rust. The second one i sold to a friend of mine who is also an enthusiast. The third one is to this day the only one road legal. But next year my friend will have his on the road.

My Rev4 Sonic shadow.

Previously to this I had 3 GT4s.

The GT4 ST205 WRC probably was pound for pound my best all around car.

Just the one for me, an immaculate 1990 Mica blue mk1. I know what the OP means though, it's one of the cars I miss most and I've been close to buying another many times, either another mk1 or a mk3. Brilliant cars smile

I really wanted a mk1, but for the price of a nice rust free example I could buy a nice facelift mk3. So I did! Now I'm hooked on mid engined cars, so when I replace the MR2 it will cost a lot more money...

An Elise is the next natural step :-) Both a friend and I chose directly between a mk3 MR2 and an Elise. The Elise drives better, but us obviously a bit noisier and more expensive to service, insure and fit tyres to.

I am on my 3rd MR2 biggrin

I had...

A 1997 Mk2 N/A (Rev4)*170 bhp*

1999 Mk2 Turbo (Rev5)*275bhp*

NOW: 2000 Mk3 Roadster *140bhp*

Thoughts?

Well, the MK2's easily got the most looks-kids especially love the pop up lights and to be fair, who doesn't!

The N/A Mk2 was good fun and actually fairly planted unless provoked but not hugely agile as it isn't a light car. Brisk enough when driven hard.

The Turbo was hugely quick, big sense of theatre, and handled better with the standard Bilstein suspension but still not a true sports car as such, a little more GT car.

The Roadster is mechanically totally standard, yet it is miles more fun than either of my MK2's were-sure the Turbo would run away from it in straight lines, of course, but in the corners I think the Roadster would stick with it, and crucially, it is far more communicative and FUN!

I seem to recall it being a conversion, rather than a genuine rev5 turbo?

No square plates as well smile

That was my impression too.

As well as the UK front plate, the side strips are raised whereas those on turbos are flush. There will be other clues pointing to a UK car which can't be seen in that photo.

Rare is spot on. In the last 7 years I have only seen two JDM Rev 5 turbos on the road.

Unfortunately an Elise is basically uninsurable at my age. But the VX220 is reasonable, not sure how much of an upgrade it is over MR2?

I've not driven one to be honest, but most people seem to report them as like a slightly blunter Elise. I expect they're better to drive than an MR2, but you'd pay for that with a general lack of NVH. That said, I had an Elise as my only car for three years and used it regularly for another 5 years as a second car and found it fine although a bit of a pain on the motorway.

I ran a rev3 MR2 for a few years and in from testing one a VX220 is a league apart in precision / agility. Remember being "a blunter Elise" still puts it miles and miles away from almost any other car on the road. Its much less comfortable than a rev2 MR2 though. Get a VX220 turbo biggrin

Agree with the comments about the Mk2 being more of a cruiser but I was stunned how well it handled itself on Silverstone at the June Sunday Service. A VX220 did get by eventually but only because my brakes overheated and I had to crawl a lap or two. smile

An open track like Silverstone lends itself to the Mk2's handling.

Anything tighter or more road like and the Elise/VX220 is off like a shot.

Even the Mk3's can't hold a candle to the proper stuff on the road.

Saying that, i do quite fancy another Mk2 at some point in the not too distant future.

Between me and my missus we have owned 3....all Mk 2 NA. Ive owned my current one twice! Like I've seen many other people say, for the money I just can't see what to replace it with. I'm hoping, if all goes to plan later this year, to replace it with a Mk2 turbo!

I've just added a third. Rev 4 G-ltd. tidy car and picked it up cheap as I thought my rev 3 turbo was dead.

Turns out the rev 3 is fine and I'm now the proud owner of two at once.

Going to stick with the NA & sell the turbo. The NA has a lot less miles & better body so it'll do me while I'm saving for a house.

May add a V6 once that's done smile

I'm on the hunt for a MK2 Turbo T-Bar at the moment but there isn't much about?

Anyone fancy selling up?
