My Thoughts :

Currently own Alfa GT, GTR and MR2.

Have to say i love my MR2 track car weights just over 1000kg.
Nose can be light and understeer
Gear shift precise and perfect.
Starts 1st time everytime.
Brakes and pretty good even in std form but will benefit from braided lines and Dot 5.1.
Can't really tune a N/A engine why bother ?
About to fit some 15" wheels and Toyo 888
Writting off the car doesn't really concerns me
Why do you need such high boiling point fluid and lines before upgrading pads as minimum?!

Do you track it?

Why bother tune it? Turbo kits can be very fun!
No point turbo'ing an NA MR2 (assuming Mk2 3SGE) - much more cost effective to just put in a 3SGTE.

I am into 15 months ownership with my MR2.

No issues, just routine servicing (a brake hose was replaced for the MOT but covered by warranty), and 41mpg on daily commute, 46mpg on long run.

No experience of MX5 - believe them to be good cars, but I was after a budget mid-engine layout and Elise's were too expensive. Also, I particularly like the roof mechanism on the MR2 and the lack of quarter lights on the doors. Its the little details...

Mine also has the (much derided) SMT semi auto - again, because I wanted something different. With the SMT you also get stability control (always on - there is no switch) and traction control. So if you want to try the sideways thing, get a manual.

The oval bore / cat failure issue can be a worry, but later ones are apparently better (post facelift - look for front foglights). These also have a six speed gearbox, more bracing, and some other detail changes.

Much more info at MR2ROC website, plus some nice cars for sale.

well after some deliberation, i plumped for the mx-5, silver mark 1, mainly as i got it for stupid money, has mot and 6 motnhs tax, needs some little bits of work to be a decent looking car, but im already on to that, and should be fully on the road this weekend.

Good choice

Is it only half on the road at the moment?

well, to be honest, ive had a bit of a nightmare with it from the day i bought it, got it home from chester, and the car wouldnt start later that day, turned out the battery was shagged, rear shocks, top mounts, brakes and handbrake all want replacing, but it is solid structurally which to be honest is all i was worried about, but the biggest issue was the roof, i was assured although tatty it didnt leak, first drip of rain, and it leaks like a fookin sieve, but hey ho ya live and learn. it is taxed and tested, and the engine and gearbox are as sweet as a nut, in fact id go as far as saying the gearbox is the best ive ever used in a car. im getting the above sorted as i write this before i use her in anger on the road. looking for a hardtop at the moment as well, so if you know of any going on the cheap, let me know if you would.

Haha, mine also leaks, all part of the fun, just a pain going to work with wet trousers. I have friends using 340r's in all weathers so I think it's just a dose of MTFU needed!

I have a hardtop but love the roof down in everything but heavy rain!
