My aunt used to have an automatic Celica - the rounded one with the pop-up headlights, a G-reg if I remember rightly. She never used to take it over about 40mph unless on the motorway, the only time it ever got the cobwebs blown out was when my uncle drove it. But, she really liked that car, and it was as reliable and sensible and painless to own as any other Toyota. I can see the automatic versions of this attracting some similar sales.
i think 70% of sales are with the manual box i read..however, the auto box is supposed to be v.good in this.. never owned (or wanted to own) an auto before.. but ticked the box this time.. not very PH i know but fk it
in "auto" mode its supposed to be very intuitive.
in manual/sport mode .. which is where it this AT is at its supposed to be very (very) good.
>its a Lexus box i believe and alot of tuning has gone into it.
>its fully manual (you can sit there bouncing it off the limiter and it wont auto change up)
>it rev matches/blips its downshifts (which is very useful if you cant heal/toe very well .. )
>locking torque converter (so can still have fun )
>0.2s shift times
>will allow its downshifts at high rpm (provided you would be doing 7200rpm or less (7400 limit) in the gear requested).
seems pretty good to me.
quite appealed to me.. ive driven a few flappys before (eg Fez,Lambo) and it always feels special!.. but the GT86 is the first car ive ever wanted to buy brand new (or that's decent that i could afford to!) so thought bugger it i'll spec it right up.
i plan to use this more than a weekend toy aswell, so the autp box will certainly be useful for my 60 mile friday commutes home on the choked up motorway (stop start most the way!) .. and also wife friendly.. my mrs isnt exactly mechanically sympathetic so it used to grind my gears when she drove us home in the S2000 (from a meal out/pub etc) after i'd had a few beers.. so i can finally enjoy the drive home! > will be a blessing!
6th gear is longer as well in the auto, so does less rpm when i do take it to work .. so should keep the cabin quieter, and better mpg for 90% motorway part of my commute (120miles/day round trip). it runs at 800rpm less than the manual at 85mph.
Saw my first one today, followed it for about 10 miles in stop/start traffic, so had a good look at it.
The car was red and I thought looked pretty good in the metal;
- the twin exhaust set up was nice
- rear light clusters were clean and well designed
- the real spoiler looked a little odd, especially towards the ends
- the sides and front were very well proportioned
- wheels looked a tad small in the arches, maybe a small suspension drop is in order?
All in all I liked it a lot, it was much better in the metal than in the pictures.

Bonus!
Just got a quote for insurance which is with esure; £300 in March for the Nissan. To swap to the 86 will get a small refund of c. £15 which implies it'll be about £250 pa normally. Happy with that.

But seriously - Good car choice, I'm looking forward to picking one of these up in 5-7 years time

£1600 a year for me at age 19. Pretty good IMO! I've started saving for one...Just got a quote for insurance which is with esure; £300 in March for the Nissan. To swap to the 86 will get a small refund of c. £15 which implies it'll be about £250 pa normally. Happy with that.

The brakes are.... expensive.

And if you're going to de-spoiler, then surely...

The brakes, I can live without.
The spoiler,
I can see the slippery slope looming...
I'd urge you to reconsider re the brakes and keep them. You might be able to get away with good advanced observation and planning etc., but ther'll come a time when you might be glad that you left the brakes fitted. Anyway, no brakes will be an MOT failure when it's due in 3 years. The spoiler,

Or have I misread your entry
I saw one in the showroom for the first time on Thursday and have a test drive for tomorrow morning. In the flesh it looks the absolute nuts but £1600 for leather/alcantara seems pretty expensive considering how small the seats actually are! With metallic paint that will make it £27K!
All of a sudden it make my other choice, a Focus ST3, seem very cheap.
5 year warranty is great as is the thought of Toyota reliability (in Basil Faulty voice: "don't mention the brakes"). And the tyres are £100.
I am really torn. It looks and feels great and I didn't think the interior was at all bad considering what some were saying, and I drive mainly German cars. It has a certain mini-LFA look about it and would certainly make you feel special driving it. Oh, and isofix seats (makes a strong case for the Mrs). Talking of seats, I sat in the rear and at 5'9'' tall it wasn't uncomfortable save my feet which felt squashed by the low front seat. That and the fact it is a little strange looking up and seeing the rear window... Definitely for small children or short journeys for adults.
