No, you have not accidentally clicked on a link for Mumsnet, this is a thread for the Nissan Qashqai on PistonHeads! hehe

The reason for me starting this thread is that I've just bought (well, leased) one and thought surely I can't be the only person on here who has done so! I've not got it yet (should arrive in May), but it's an Ink Blue 1.2 DIG-T Tekna. This means it's petrol, manual, FWD and the top spec. I had a quick test drive in one as the idea of a moderately-sized car with a 1.2-litre engine sounded awful, but it was actually fine. The Tekna trim level comes with loads of cool gadgets that I will never use can't wait to try, although the idea of 19" wheels fills me with dread. Hopefully the ride won't be too much harsher than the one on 17"s that I test drove.

The car is for my wife to replace her R56 MINI Cooper S, so it will be a big step down in performance terms, but a massive jump in the practicality stakes! I'll post some pictures and thoughts when it turns up. Has anyone else got a Mk2 Qashqai then? Ours should look very much like this:

My folks have just leased a brand new Qashqai, the pre facelift one (one before the one pictured above), but what a great car super comfortable and quiet on the motorway, dead practical!

Panoramic sunroof is a must the car feels so spacious. Also the 4 cameras aren't just a gimmick they come in very useful, I think you'll really like it as a workhorse/family bus

Pictures when you get it please

I happen to think that's a great looking car, and I'm sure it will be quite a good drive too. Very good choice!

Mostly they just stick chrome on everything. And you need to pay to post anything anywhere seemingly.
We have a 1.5 dci and I'm always singing its praises. It has many faults and is far from perfect but the money they cost and similar sized and priced other marque's haven't got a look in as all rounder imo.

ummm.... a car that size and a 1.2 engine is not going to be good.

i know you said that its going to be a downgrade performance wise, but it will be woefully slow, you (or your wife) will have to hammer the throttle down to go anywere.

I really don't think i could go below a 2 litre in a car that large

Not a particularly well informed post I'm afraid, the 1.2 produces 115PS and 190NM, does 0-60 in 10.9 and has a top end of 115mph, so whilst not a firecracker by any means, one would imagine that would be sufficient to comfortably keep up with everyday traffic. And it's likely that it is very economical too - 'Combined', for what it is worth, is quoted at 50MPG.

Of course, the 'raison d'etre' of these cars is not performance as you might have guessed, and you certainly wouldn't buy one for a track day or to go off-roading in. However, given it's target market and what it sets out to do, it seems to hit the nail on the head. I'd imagine, like the older version, it'll be a big hit - and the 1.2 a big part of that.

yes i agree it was not a very well informed post as i actually know nothing about them, apart from they are big like a 4x4 and have a tiny engine.

i still think that with that amount of power it is very under powered though, but with mums doing the school run and people using it as a shopping car, it will probably be 'adequate' although you will still need to give it some to go in normal use and cos of that mpg will suffer

That 1.2 engine seems to be part of the new generation of small, highly efficient 3 cylinder engines. Ford have a new 1 litre, 3 cylinder which will go in the Focus and there are rumours that it will go in the Mondeo in some markets. Like wise the VW empire have the 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder TSI engine that goes into cars as big as the Skoda Octavia.

Yup, downsizing is 'in'.

The 1.2 engine here though is a 4 cyl turbo and is meant to be the equivalent of the old 1.6 petrol, except lighter, cleaner, and more NMs. Think of the car as a jacked up Golf class vehicle rather than a large 4x4, since its footprint is that sort of size.

We have a +2 ntec + job (1.5d) the old shape. We've had it for a couple of years and it is a brilliant family car. The problem we have is that they are no longer making the +2 version, we'll have to go for the xtrail which I suspect will be a pile of cash more.

The 1.2 turbo engine wasn't too bad actually. Nissan claim it's both more economical and more powerful than the unit it replaces in the old model, which was an N/A 1.6. Granted, it still looks weird reading it has an engine that small! I'll be interested to try it when loaded with five people and luggage, when I reckon it may struggle slightly, but otherwise it makes sense for how we will use the car.

I've had mine (Ink Blue 1.5DCI)for two weeks now. Leased for 2 years on 15k PA.

Book MPG is 74, in reality I am getting around 45-55 depending on journey. My commute is 33 miles each way, of which 26 is on the M1 at 70-80. To start with the MPG was low 40s, but as the miles have been added (now on approx. 700) the average is increasing. I will be happy with 55-60mpg which will equate to roughly a halved monthly fuel bill from my previous commuter car.

Having come from a SLK230kompressor to this I have to admit I am not actually disappointed in the performance. Your driving style has to be modified a bit to keep it moving well, and you do have to change gear a bit more as below 1500rpm it is absolutely useless, think big turbo lag type feeling. Travelling at 65-70 in traffic is MUCH more economical than keeping up with traffic at 85-90 in the outside lane.

Even on the 19" wheels it isn't crashy or hard, probably firmer than the 17s, but not uncomfortable.

Comfort wise it is brilliant, and it has a lot of toys.
- Auto High beam is brilliant and seamless in action
- LED lights make Xenons I have had in other cars look like candles
- Aux input is great, fill a USB memory stick full of MP3 and leave it attached, it even indexes the songs and creates album/artist lists etc just like an iPod.
- Around View Cameras / Parking sensors are great
- DAB radio never stutters / breaks up
- Sat Nav is quick and junctions view / autozoom facilty are very smooth
- Kids (2 & 5) love the panoramic roof, especially in the dark when they can see the stars
- The display in the centre of the dash is great, displays tons of different info
- Blind spot system is really useful, although if mirrors are adjusted correctly it seems a bit pointless as every time it flashes on I can see the car / truck etc in the mirrors anyway.
- Bluetooth to phone has great call quality

There are a few bits that aren't great, but don't really put me off the car
- Lane departure warning is a bit of a pain, I still have it on, but ill probably turn it off soon
- Heated seats aren't very hot
- Mirrors don't auto fold when locking the car, seems a bit of a waste having electric folding mirrors and then not enabling this
- There is no autolock facility to lock the doors when moving.
- The Nissan Connect App (Google / Facebook etc) seems a bit pointless and works only occasionally for me, there are supposed to be more apps, but not sure when they will arrive.
- I have no idea what the Eco Score is, how it calculates your score or why it has a history function when it only ever shows your current journey.
- The iKey/Keyless go system I find a bit of a pain, functionally its great, but what's wrong with putting a key in a slot etc, at least it gives you somewhere to store the key. Mine just ends up dropped in one of the cupholders and its a pain when I get home and need to press the gate remote.

Overall I am really happy with the car. I was split between this and a Golf R (slight difference), but when adding everything up and looking at life in general I think I made the right choice, a cheap economical commute car and also a decent family / dog / bike transporter when required.

Ah - was hoping to find some new Qashqai chat on here! Seriously considering one of these as the family car - need to go and try the 1.2 petrol vs the 1.5 diesel engine. Any others try both before deciding on one or the other? Don't really need a diesel and likely to be less than 10k a year, but is it better to drive than the petrol?

Also, is the Tekna worth the extra for the additional 'toys' is comes with?

I've not driven the diesel, but it's without a doubt more economical and the torque would likely make it the de facto choice if you frequently have a full car or tow etc. That said, petrols are almost always more fun (and refined!) than diesels, so am happy with my choice.

I went for the Tekna because the monthly lease price wasn't that much different to the Acenta Premium, but if I were stumping up the difference in cash then I'm not so sure I'd have been so keen! The thing that really swung it was that the Tekna comes standard with bi-LED headlamps, whereas all of the lower models are stuck with halogens. Coming from the excellent bi-xenons of her MINI, my wife wasn't keen to take a step back in terms of lighting performance! I also very much like heated seats. biggrin
