MR2 mk2 project :)

So i bought an MR2 GT Jap import for a project and was wondering if any of you have any pointers or tips while im striping and hopefully rebuilding it 
I bought it knowing there were some mechanical problems but until i had it delivered i had very little to go on..
I think its blown the head gasket as theres an obvious compression/ combustion leak to the left side of the engine right beneath the water outlet?? It sounds very loud when i started it and the only way to describe it is almost pneumatic sounding and there is like a jet of air/ gas from this area that is very hot..
I cant get a good look at it yet due to the position but ive begun removing hoses and was going to attempt to get ddown to the head gasket and hopefully find something on the way that is less of a problem...
This is my first attempt at a restoration project and i have minimal mechanical experience so fingers crossed! Haha
I do have the toyota factory repair manual to hand so will be using that for instruction as i go..
The question is, do any of you have any pointers and/ or oppinions as to what i should improve or refurbish on the way??
I dont want to get it rebiult to find i could have done more while i was at it
Any response welcome and pictures to follow wih more info too..
