Endo - good to have your input on this.
I have used the term "Jap" when describing Japanese cars, and my wife was horrified and said it is an offensive term over in the US. I was merely using it an abbreviation. I use it in the same way as Brits, Scots, Aussies etc.

It's an offensive term to the Japanese.

How do you think they'd feel about being named in italics?

Topic seems played out.

We have a victory by 3 to 1 for unthinking and casual racism.

Well done Pistonheads.

Personally I'd change it to something like 'Japanese Cars', just in case anyone was offended. The term 'Jap' was extremely racist at one time and whether or not it is now, I don't think I'd ever be comfortable using the term in front of a Japanese person. It's interesting to see that viewpoints are mixed between Japanese speakers but surely that alone says that some people are offended by it?

Overall I don't think it'll matter much either way because this section barely gets any traffic but that's my take on things.

I see 4/5 (80%) of the poll say no.
Does that mean because a majority are happy to be insulting and disrespectful the name remains?

The poll was a bit like asking a classroom full of schoolkids whether they want to be well behaved or not. Nobody should be surprised at the outcome.

It would be nice if the powers-that-be at PH would see the light and do the right thing for PH.

Except that it isn't a classroom and I doubt that anyone is a school kid who cast a vote. Never mind, I am sure if you hold your breath teacher will let you get your own way.

Top marks for spotting that this isn't really a classroom. Nothing much gets past you, does it?

You're kind of living up (down...) to the image your comments point to...

So it's personal insults.

Do you understand irony.

Horray for democracy - the perfect excuse for the tyranny of the majority over all minorities...

Not many people are allergic to peanuts - how about we vote on adding peanut oil to tap water?

OK, eating peanuts can kill you if you're allergic to them..... So, your point is.

Oh, please don't roll your eyes at me.

Sorry about the eyes, but my point is that if you agree that something that doesn't cause harm to you, or to many others, can indeed cause harm to a minority, is the amount of harm you consider acceptable really based on the size of the populations on either side?

Why not start a petition to have all the Jap parts, events, groups, mags, etc, etc all changes their names.

As I think has been made perfectly clear, this is absolutely not just more 'PC' whining. It's something far more fundamental than that.

It'd be nice if the people using the term could see the light and self-edit. As has been pointed out and this thread has proved, much of the time the term is being used casually and unthinkingly by people who see and hear others using it and think it's OK. That's how these things work. In my experience, the vast majority of people who use the term have had little or no direct contact with Japan or the Japanese and have probably never been in the situation where they would realise what the term means to those whom it refers to.

I like Pistonheads, and tend to respect the powers-that-be here. That's why I hoped that PH admin would lead by example and stop using the term 'Jap' in a sub-forum name. You personally guaranteed that this would not happen (on the forum split thread, where you also told me that I'm "free to leave" if I don't like it...) so I'm not surprised, just disappointed again. To my mind, it's something that should not need to be voted on.

On the other hand, it's encouraging to see that there are other members here who feel the same way as me and are prepared to say so.
