Toyota Rav4 opinions wanted

Mrs AB8219, currently has a Mk5 Golf 1.6 FSi. It has been in and out of the garage, due mainly to those damn engine management lights, and now the EPC light has come out to play also.
To put it bluntly, I've lost all confidence in the car, and unless the latest 'Lets play guess what the light means' is a simple fix, I'm going to do the relevant work, and then sell the thing. It's due it's MOT next week so I will at least have that to sell it with also. If that is the route I need to go down.
Anyway, I'm have said to Mrs AB, that I think we should get something Japanese. Toyota, Honda, Nissan whatever. To see if we can get something more reliable. Am I right in thinking along these lines? All cars can have issues of course, but the general consensus seems to be that the Jap engines are more reliable than our European ones.
After showing some options to Mrs AB, I was trying to point towards a Corolla, a RAV4 has grabbed her attention. No problem for me, nice car, I like the looks, but I know NOTHING about them. And would appreciate some advice.
Our budget will be ~£2500. She drives from Maidenhead to Camberley (~30 miles a day) for her commute, so I'm unsure if a Diesel would be the way to go or stick with petrol.
