i've been thinking about a really fun rear wheel drive car which i could drive everyday, and had never even heard about the AE86 until i saw best motoring with Keiichi Tsuchiya drifting and racing one against some hardcore machinery. so now im seriously thinking about one but was wondering if anyone has had one and has any views on them?

they seem very tunable and handle well is this correct

Yup, I'd buy one tomorrow if I could find one.

Really, find one for sensible money, and buy 5. I'll have one off you.

So will most of the posters here.

It's a proper classic. It just got pretty much everything right.

I'd love one. But, big money for a 15 year old jap hatchback seems insane.

Agreed,a couple of likely characters(locally) were asking well over a grand for a real rust bucket(read as almost scrap!) recently.-Tho I have heard it said that they're worth restoring in almost any condition. For a Project car, spares from other corrollas should fit, most places,& would be dirt cheap,I s'pose

The Irish buy them up or some bloke in Leeds who then sells them to the Irish. In paddy land no-one will be seen dead in a FWD car (well in the south anyway) everyone has Rolla's.

IF you can find one cheap, buy one. I know a few people who have a large collection of them & spares too.

They are the car to have for drifting & with drifting taking off they are also becoming expensive like 5-6k for tidy ones.

They are OK to drive in fact great fun, you would not believe how easy they are to slide around wet or dry, ditch the engine & fit an MR2 20V lump for 160bhp & total reliability.

4A-GZE lump fits quite nicely I think. Can we say 200bhp with a supercharger.....

Ive seen bog standard ones for sale her in Ireland for €6k with no history, I would think a 200sx to be a better option.

They have an awful reputation with BiB here,

Both good cars.
But I would have to have the AE86, just cos its a bit rarer, and hasn't got the Maxy P image a 200SX can get.

Just as I was getting used to my GT4, someone has to mention the car I forgot to think about before buying it.

it would be a great option if i was slightly older, but forgive me if im wrong but arent 200sx's turbo'd? that one word shuts the door on insurance for me considering im only 19, where as ive been quoted £650 for an ae86 when im 20

They are indeed turbo'd.

Still, £600ish for insuring an AE86 @ 20 aint bad. Is that on an import?
(Did they ever do a UK AE86 RWD coupe?)

Plus, reliablity wise, its Toyota's bulletproof 4AGE lump, vs Nissan's rather unstable 1800 (or 2.0) Turbo lump.

Go for the 'Rolla, and when you've got some NCB, get the supercharger kit for it. Then sell it to me.

thats on a UK spec AE86 corolla GT coupe through direct line, its annoying having to wait for another year to build up my no claims but it'll be worth it.

I blame Initial D for wanting an Hachiroku!

I race one.

They are fun but there are many better cars out there, especially for the money.

I have a spare scruffy shell available if somebody wanted a restoration project. I also have loads of old parts lying around if anyone gets stuck.
