Hi chaps,

What are your thoughts on this. My daily commute is 100% stop start traffic and have thought that the Auto would be the best option, however I'm worried that it will be slower and make the driving experience feel less exciting compared to the manual.

Your thoughts below

thanks,

Dan

Isn't the auto option in this just an old fashioned slusher? If so, it's too much of a compromise. Stick to a manual and don't be soft.

It's actually originates from the Lexus gearbox. I have read a lot of review and people have said that it's actually a clever gearbox and the shifts are pretty quick.

Rather like those complaining that it isn't that quick on a paper 0-60, or "cruising" on the motorway with the other diesel BMWs, buying one with an auto box for constant stop/start traffic is somewhat missing the point. I would try to find another way.

Drive both and see what you prefer , modern ecu controlled autos are a far cry from those older units

My test drive was in an auto - didn't stop me placing the order… for a manual. hehe

I'd guess lots of stop/start in traffic it's the sensible choice - as above; trial them both and see how you feel.

I test drove both and for me it would have to be the manual. I'm not anti-auto (in fact five out of my last seven cars have been autos), but in a car like the '86 the manual just feels much better. If you want adjustability, a torque converter has no place in your drivetrain IMHO.

My advice - find a more interesting route to work.

The auto is a good box, the demonstrator had an auto.

However, for the type of car it is the manual gives you much more control over what the car is doing, and makes it easier to take it sideways if that is your thing smile

Drove my manual GT86 for 40,000 miles and would not consider the auto ever. The car is a lightweight, relatively low powered, low grip toy that has sublime handling and needs that manual box to make it feel fun !

Add an auto and you might as well get a saloon, overweight boring diesel.
