I have owned Evos for over 10 years, currently have a IX GT and an EVO II track car and the wife has a VII.
Generally pretty reliable but important it has a good service history, the VIII and IX are serviced at 4500 mile intervals. Make sure you check the AYC pump lights come on at the dashboard as its known that some unscrupulous sellers pull the bulbs to hide a pump failure and pump rebuilds are about £500.

Owned mine for four and a half years, best car I've ever owned. Not that expensive to maintain as long as you keep up with the service. Apart from the big 45k Ines the usual services are around £150 every 6 months. Petrol is as expensive as your right foot is heavy!

Like many cars, pick up one that's been well looked after and the costs are limited to maintenance. Buy one that's been abused/had corners cut and it could cost you a significant proportion of the purchase price to put right.My advice would be to get one with a full service history (all the invoices etc, not just stamps in a book) and that has clearly been looked after (any advisories at each MOT taken care of promptly, clean, top quality parts fitted, warmed up before driving hard on test drive, etc).
I bought a VI TME a couple of years ago as a weekend toy and have not been disappointed! The handling is phenomenal.
Watch out for rust on the older models, and possibly some of the later ones to?
I saw some that looked immaculate on top but were rotten underneath, especially around the rear end.
A fresh import seems to be the way to go.

I owned a Evo 8 for 17 days.
underwhelming really.
think I hyped it up so much in my head before I got it that I was disappointed.
It was only the GSR 260 - maybe the 300 could have been better.
and as a daily driver with a long commute I done over 500 miles in the time I had it. so I would have been servicing it 3 times a year - expensive.
I still would love a EVO X though, that's on my list of cars to own.
on a side note - if you're coming from a 197 - have you looked at the megane rs 250/265? - insane cars - one of the very few cars that would tempt me back to FWD.

You've bought the wrong model, had several interactions of these and the last one was the 9 GT which with some subtle mods was making 400/400. It truly was an awesome car, scalpel sharp in the twisties and electrifying on the straights.underwhelming really.

You're going to have to spend some money tuning that one to make it come alive.

You bought the wrong model for the wrong purpose: a 260 is often joked about as not being "a real Evo" amongst Evo owners. It was severely down on power and performance (100 bhp against some standard models!) and no Evo is good for a long commute unless you live in the Highlands.underwhelming really.

Try one with 360+ bhp and you've got super car performance in a 4 door saloon and that's no exaggeration. The guy who bought my X (pretty much bang on 360 bhp) came from an E46 M3 with about 320 bhp, you should have seen his face when I put my foot down on the test drive - panic, followed by sheer disbelief is probably the best way to describe it.
At that power level you're looking at 4.5 seconds 0-60 mph in the real world, which is pretty damn quick.
