After about 20 years (and 26 previous super fast cars, such as 911, Europa S, Tuscan, Cayman S, M3, S2000 and many, many more, I have purchased an EVO X, with just 16000 kms on the clock. I am getting to know the car but it seems to be in a league of its own regarding throttle response, turning ability and overall performance. The steering feel is just perfect (and that comes from a former Porsche owner) and every ride in it is an occasion. I have lusted after these things for such a long time, waiting for the right model to come out and to locate a sample with low mileage and no modifications. Well worth the wait and so hard to be driven in a semi-contained way. Engine note is fairly pleasant too as is the ride. I have been unable to relate to any of the criticism. Ecstatic.

People who havn't driven them reasonably hard still seem to think it's hype or that they have now been eclipsed by modern hatches that can do 170mph but they absolutely havn't been have they!

The interior of the X is probably the best of them but if sacrificing interior quality is what it takes then fine with me, and has been since I bought my first 6 in 1999!

Enjoy it and try to remember that it does have a limit

My friend used to have a 9 fq360. Absolutely brilliant car that he preferred to the e46 m3 that came after it. I think he looks back on it in a better light to his 996 turbo too.

I can believe that anybody who has owned an EVO and several other sports cars, takes a preference to the EVO...it was hard to believe but I can see it now. All of sudden you are doing 200 (kph) and you think, "when and how did this happen?". At the moment I am trying to work out the various settings...there should be well over 50 and though I am not a fan of electronic aids, this is actually fun.I guess Super Sport/Tarmac/ESP completely off/Manual is the absolute setting and there should be a launch control somewhere in there too...

I've owned and driven many a sports car. Nothing will ever be as fast as an Evo can be on the road. Not the most fun I've had in cars or the most enjoyable to drive (not that they are bad in any way) but they are so accomplished and for lack of a better word perfect for UK shoddy roads.

Every petrol head should own one at some point to experience.

Had three Evo's ranging from a 7GSR-9GT, absolutely awesome cars and if I'm honest, the 9 was probably the most exciting car I've owned. They have their drawbacks though, the huge running costs and as I found out twice, they attract dheads, so that ruined it a little.

Just tried the car under somewhat more demanding conditions. I was somewhat disappointed with the brakes (especially durability) and the steering feel is indeed slightly compromised. Traction is phenomenal and the pace it can achieve is simply out of this world. Consumption is an outrage, even under normal driving conditions. I was also expecting a bigger tendency towards oversteer (which I would have preferred). When pushed it progresses from mild understeer to neutral drift and then mild oversteer, even with all electronics off. Just as good as my previous Cayman S (in very different ways), and costs half the money.

Overall, the car is simply a force of nature. As you guys said, if you are a sports driving enthusiast you simply have to own one at some point in your life.

Take a look at Performance Friction discs and pads or Carbotech XP12 pads (obviously with matching fluid) going further means AP 6 pot front calipers and 4 pot rears or a similar upgrade kit from Alcon

High praise indeed. Almost bought one towards the end of last year but the boot was just a bit too small for my fathers wheelchair. Went the V8 route with a Lexus ISF instead. Now I'm tempted to change and the X is still on the shortlist. I think I have found a suitable wheelchair for the tiny boot of the X. Having owned a few Galant VR4s I miss the ability to carry speed into bends without breaking sweat and the improved setup on the X means it would be way more surefooted than the Galants were. Soundtrack won't be as nice but that's the trade off I guess.

You are aware of the Evo 9 Wagon, right? I'm an ex-VR4 Legnum owner too and stumbled upon my Evo Wagon when looking to replace my own manual VR4 after it was stolen. Had no idea they made them before seeing it in the classifieds. The GT version even has the RS Diff as standard. There are quite a few for sale at the moment and for the price I don't believe there is a faster way to get the groceries home!

Evo's are dynamically awesome - sometimes it makes me laugh out loud how easy it is to pedal it along at silly speed. Evo magazine's review hits it on the head with the negative points being 'Prison food' lol. But they are addictive when it comes to modifying - almost any level of tune has been done before and the tuning paths are very well trodden with an abundance of used parts on MLR.

Mr Longbow, nice to see another ex CVR4 member on here. I still remember your thread and the state the car was sadly found in. I considered the 9 wagon but the X is still the Evo of choice for me. I've found a fettled X that I'm hoping to view soon. At just under 500bhp it should keep me entertained with scope for a bit more power if needed.

Great cars, had my E8 for 14 years now, E9 suspension and Mivec VVT, AP 6 pots, lightweight alloys. We've had lots of supposedly superior cars in that time, they've come and gone. Out of them, I miss the IS-F and the R8, but I can't imagine not having an Evo. Horrendous thirst and routine maintenance costs offset by superb ability and reliability for a car running 120 brake over standard. If I sold it, it would only be to buy another.

Just bought my 15th in as many years. Keep trying to move away from them but always come back. Took 18 months to find the right on this time. Becoming classic status now so will be keeping this one as practically impossible to replace (mint low mileage standard VI GSR)

Congrats. Picking my Evo X up this weekend, rather excited! Just the small matter of selling the ISF next.

I bought my Evo X FQ330SST nearly three years ago. Quite simply the best car I've owned or driven in 40 years.
In my medium term garage I'd originally pencilled in 2017 to replace it. But it's a keeper. I shall do a modest upgrade to 340bhp without compromising the mpg. (If all goes to plan.)
Even on poor roads in bad weather it's a joy to drive.
SWMBO is not surprised that I'm in no hurry to change and drives it herself when she can get the keys.

Happy driving in 2017 to all.

The X is a pretty cracking allrounder. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is the exhaust note but it's what I expected for a 4 pot. It seems 370-380 is possible safely on a stock engine with the usual supporting mods. Which tuner will you be using?

I agree about the exhaust note, nothing special is it?
My understanding is that the auto box is rated up to 400bhp. Not sure I'd want all of that in a car I use most days mind.
I'm in the northeast so will use EvoTune in Durham.
Probably give it a month or two. Save up the pennies. Can't wait!
