Hello,

I'm in the planning stages of a project and looking at suitable FWD engines and gearboxes. I've noticed that the GG Mazda 6 can be had for Mondeo money and comes with Mazdas versions of the 2.0 and 2.3 Duratec.

So far I've discovered that the 2.0 first came with 139bhp v the mondeos 145bhp and apparently has a weaker crank than the Ford units. The facelift 2.0 came with 150bhp and started being called the MZR which I'm assuming is similar to the NC mx5.

I like the idea of the 2.3 as it seems a cheap and easy way to a 166bhp Duratec but some say they prefer the 2.0. So far I've learned that the Mazda is called the L3VE and has VVT. Some say to get rid of it but I think it's similar to the Ford VCT that can be controlled after further mods using an aftermarket ECU. Saying that if initially be happy with 166bhp and am planning on using the Mazda ECU anyway. It also has easily removed balance shafts.

Does anyone know anything else about these engines and any significant differences that have with the Ford units?

Im also struggling to find information on the manual gearboxes that were used with these engines. All I've found is that the 6 speed is stronger but I'd like to know ratios, dual mass flywheel and 'box weights etc.

Cheers, Dai

That might be of interest to you.

Is the Mazda/Ford a must-have? Honda K series donk has a lot of support.

Can't help with the spec but my wife runs a 2.3 mazda6 and I'm very impressed with it (for what it is)

I would say that the mpg is rubbish for the performance (my 328 was more powerfull and more economical)

Cheers for the advice so far.

MPG should be a bit higher in my planned application of 5-600kg total weight.

Honda Engine would be nice as I loved my ATR but they are loads more expensive, iron blocked and the gearboxes they come with are prone to issues.
